This study examined actual situation of jazz education in middle school students who participated and did not participate in jazz education, and it tried to find directions for improvement of jazz education's problems and systematic education in several educational institutions including the middle school. Add to it, the purpose of this study is to provide basic data for revitalization of jazz dance. Research subjects were middle school students who participated and did not participate in jazz education of schools, culture centers and private institutes in Daejeon and Chungbuk. Among questionnaires of total 500 research subjects, questionnaires which were poor or included missing answers were excluded, so that effective number of sample was 460; among 460, the number of middle school students who participated in jazz education was 210 while the number of middle school students who did not participate in jazz education was 250. And frequency analysis was performed by SPSS depending on the purpose of this study. Based on such analyses, the results of this study are like followings:
First, the result showed that students who participated in jazz dance had higher interest in jazz dance than the students who did not participate in jazz dance. From it, it can be inferred that students who experienced jazz dance had higher interest in jazz dance because they better knew about jazz dance than students who did not participate in jazz dance.
Second, the result represented that experience period of jazz dance in students who participated in jazz dance was generally less than one month, so that motivation and interest of students for doing jazz dance continuously should be incited. Also, the most biggest problem that students felt in learning jazz dance was the burden about school works, which reflects the problem of the entrance centered-current educational situation.
Third, according to the result of inquiring "to whom do you want to learn if you learn jazz dance?", the answer, teachers who majored in jazz dance, was the highest. The result of investigating when and where do you want to learn jazz dance if jazz class is started in the school showed that most students want to learn it in physical education(dance) class of the school.
Fourth, according to the result of examining "do you think jazz dance is required to the education of the school", most students answered "it is required more than average". It can be interpreted that students who participated in jazz dance already realized the necessity of jazz education including its value. Finally, in the question about what should be improved for revitalization of the jazz education after it was performed in the school, most students answered interesting teaching contents and diversification of participating programs as the highest answer.
If considering such results comprehensively, the government-led active support and management are required in education institutions, and the schools should expand facilities and develop programs for dance education continuing to be interested in jazz dance. If expansion of facilities and development of programs are achieved and jazz dance education put down roots, jazz dance will contribute to form sound leisure culture as one of lifelong education. For it, with more researches and the change of recognition about dance education, expansion of facilities, reeducation of physical education(dance) teachers, cultivation of specialized teachers in jazz dance, development of various programs and etc should be further actively and continuously performed.
