As going through the urbanization and industrialization along with the rapid economic growth, the people’s living awareness and standard have considerably increased, but the sudden change of paradigm in the society has become the chances to provoke many social issues and stress for modern people.
These days, due to these changes, the cultural life to the modern people has become essential and very important. They are relieving their stresses, which they feel in daily life, in their own ways, living getting the physical and mental rest through the new cultural space.
While the cultural life in the past was recognized as only the certain stratums enjoyed the movies, performances, plays, and so on, based on the arts, in the modern cultural life, it is in the situation where the new cultural space would be required as the range may alter comprehensively and diversely. In these days, as the lifestyles of hobbies, art activities, education experience, leisure, relaxation, etc. change, a variety of facilities and institutions are concentrating on creating the complex cultural space.
However, when entering the modern time, the cultural space is constantly developing and changing, whereas it is now in the situation where the utilization of identity system which could represent the attributes, such as the fusion, complexation, diversification, etc. of complex cultural space would not be conducted well.
Through the ‘Cultural recycling project for abandoned industrial facility’ hosted by Ministry of, Sports and Tourism in 2014, the open recruitment project was carried out to make the unused space within the industrial complex into the cultural art space. Of those, Gwangmyeong up-cycle art center, located in Gwangmyeong-si, was created to enjoy the diverse cultural experiences, such as education, exhibitions, performances, events, etc., as the complex cultural space planning the various programs by utilizing ‘up-cycle’ as a core value.
However, the identity currently being used does not reflect the inherent features well which the Gwangmyeong up-cycle art center has, and it is in the situation where the proper identity system is not fulfilled. As it is the complex cultural space where the variable programs are being carried out, after apprehending the necessity of new identity development in order to express this effectively, it was selected as the object of this study.
Therefore, now, this paper is going to suggest through the flexible identity in order to clearly reveal the identity of Gwangmyeong up-cycle art center, a current complex cultural space. As the flexible identity has flexible and variable attributes, it is expected that it could express the diverse and fluid programs of complex cultural space effectively. In addition, in order to establish the identity which only this center has by highlighting the up-cycle, a core keyword of Gwangmyeong up-cycle art center and also, to communicate directly with visitors through the flexible identity, due to this, it could be expected that it may contribute to improving the images of this center and increasing the awareness effect.
In this paper, the advent background and characteristics of the complex cultural space and flexible identity were examined through the literature and examples, and the current state of Gwangmyeong up-cycle art center was investigated. Furthermore, the problems of current identity through the questionnaire survey were presented, and the new flexible identity system of Gwangmyeong up-cycle art center was proposed based on the images which the visitors may prefer.
