This thesis started with posing a question to existing views regarding the writer Lee-sang's literature of the 1930s, and, if possible, developed its point of argument with an intention of renewing the essens of its interpretation.
The constrants of the times running through our literature in the 1930s emerged in close connection with the political, cultural situations of the times. for example, Enevery possible usurpation onour nation, political repression and subsequent crackdown on cultural and artistic circles, intensified by the aggressive wars of Japaness imperialism extending form the Manchurian Incident(1931) to the Chinese-Japanese War(1937) and the pacific - war, exerted many influence in shaping the anique natnre of our national literature in 1930s. The basic position in this thesis consists in viewing the Lee-sang's wark as implying a close inner coincincident relationship to the situation of the colonial era.
Though it is estimated that Korean people had had many difficulties seeking national spirit throghout the whole culture since the colonial era, especially the 1930s, it came from the overcomeing of the strict control of thought and the inspect, censure of speech and publication in parallel with the economic pauperization process of the time.
That is to say, literary activily within the range permitted by Japanese imperialism could nat help revealing an aspect not matched with the pursuit of national spirit.
Accordingly, In examing the literary warks of the time, we think that the attitude of attitude of attempting to grasping the inherent meaning embedded in the warks is desirable in straightening the value of literature of the age rather then that of defining the substance surfacedin the literary works. This thesis attempted to define the method of embodying the warks and its meaning, focusing it attention on exploring the refracted aspect of the zeitgeist(the spirit of the times)seen in the Lee-sang's works.
And this thesis attempted to adhere to the position of seeking to grasp Lee-sang's literature as a structure of symbol, in association with his attitude foward recognizing the actuality.
To sum what were above mentioned, there ara point as follow:
(1) When we look into Lee-sang's litweture as one structure of symbol, it is seen that his attitude toward the actuality making a difference over the whole of his works lay in his thorough consciousness of and resistance to the prescribed situation of the time and clinged to his correct mode of life.
(2) The acwquisition of symbolicity which Lee-sang's text has toward the situation of the reality is achieved through the method of embodiment such as the use of characteristic motif the borrowing of modernistic technique, transcendence of the concepts time and space, and the like.
(3) As a consequence of examing the use of charcteristic motifs, it could be made clear that there existed an aspect of set f-disruption and the prohibited actuality in case of the motif of mirror, aspects of prohibited actuality and false pose in case of the motif of wife, an aspect of resistance arising from repression on creative act in case of the motif of body, and an aspect of pursuit for freedom and historic consciousness in case of the motif of signs.
(4) As a result of reviewing the correlativity between the prologue of Lee-sang's fiction and contents of its text, it was concluded that the prologue had the close corelativity with the content of the text.
And, if it is guessed that the use of the prologue explains the exasiveness of his work or suggests the uniqueness of the method of embodiment(expression) in advance, it can be seen that there is any possibility that the prologue would be used as a means for jumping beyond the prohibited actuality.
(5) The transcendence of the concepts of time and space surfaces as laziness 「reversion of daily life」, 「immersion in absolute space」, which mean ①「limitation and resistance of intellectuals in the colonial era」, ②restoration of the lost sense of the father.
This thesis, attempting to define the method of characteristic embodiment in Lee-sang's text and its meaning in conjunction with the situation of the times, has a limitation of not taking the problem of evasineness with Lee-sang's literature into full account. In particular, for all that the analysis of the narrative structure developing in his fiction have to be preceded, what this thesis does not mention remain its weakness and great regret.
