Lots of social problems are arising from the changes of body and family life cycle of middle-aged women which results in the mental changes such as solitude, despondency, anxiety, loss of self-concept, and depression. It will be basic data for the lifelong education of the traditional dance to analyze the effects of these problems on the mental health of middle-aged women through the traditional dance. This study was designed to examine the relationship between the motivation and mental health of the middle-aged women by the degree of participation targeting the middle-aged women aged 41-61 who regularly participated in the traditional dance in the lifelong education center, culture center, and art center located in Busan, and accordingly, the following conclusion was drawn.
First, reviewing the motivation of middle-aged women who participated in the traditional dance by the demographic characteristics, it had difference in the age, educational standard and income level, while it had no significant difference in the status of spouse.
Second, reviewing the motivation of middle-aged women who participated in the traditional dance by the degree of participation, it had difference in the achievement, health promotion by the period of participation, and by the frequency of participation, it had difference in the achievement, self-developm
ent, hope for guidance, health promotion, while it had no significant difference in the time of participation.
Third, reviewing the mental health of middle-aged women who participated in the traditional dance by the demographic characteristics, it had difference in the status of spouse, educational standard, income level, while it had no difference in the age.
Fourth, reviewing the mental health of middle-aged women who participated in the traditional dance by the degree of participation, it had difference in the somatization, anxiety, hostility, paranoia by the period of participation, and by the frequency of participation, it had difference in the somatization, obsession, interpersonal sensitivity, depression, anxiety, phobic anxiety, while it had difference in the hostility by the time of participation.
Fifth, reviewing the relationship between the motivation for traditional dance and mental health, the higher the motivation for health promotion, the lower the paranoia of the mental health factor was, while the higher the motivation for self-development, the higher the depression was. Also, the higher the motivation for sociality, the higher the somatization, depression and hostility were.
Sixth, reviewing the effects of motivation of the middle-aged women who participated in the traditional dance on their mental health, the factor of motivation had no effect on the mental health.
Summing up these findings, the traditional dance turned out to have a good effect on the mental health regardless of a certain motivation. This study identified that the traditional dance had a positive effect on both the change of mental health and sociopsychologically expected effects by a constant physical activity in the physical, mental, and social aspect of the middle-aged women. It is considered as the most important thing to the middle-aged women for them to have confidence in daily life, express their feeling, and perfoming the traditional dance steadily, when they experience a sense of alienation and isolation at home and in the social relationship in our society.
