The purpose of this study is to investigate the present situation of reading education and to suggest directions for the desirable reading education in high school.
For the study, the questionnaires made up of 22 items were collected from 153 High school library-personnels. I have studied the teoritical basis of reading education and investigated reading education for high schools in Kyeong-gi County.
In order for the students to acquire of professional knowledge and skills and to solve the problem of the dehumanization, the confusion of the sense of value, and the poor educational environment, schools should enrich and cultivate students' character through reading education.
The result of the surveys were as follows and indicated some directions for the reading education in high schools.
1. Approximately 20% of high schools do not offer the reading education, because of the entrance exammination for university, the indifference of school presidents, the lack of education curriculum.
2. First and second grade students are the main subjects for reading education.
3. Most of schools have practiced the reading education in Home Room, Club activities, but reading education class should be incorporated into regular curriculum.
4. Teacher-librarian should be in charge of reading education with other teacher's assistance.
5. The 40.6% of schools surveyed do not have any reading education plan.
