      이 연구의 목적은 경상남도 진주시에서 다문화 학생들을 위한 한국어 교육이 어떻게 이루어지고 있는지를 살펴보고, 교사와 학생들의 인식을 중심으로 그 실태를 파악한 후, 한국어 교육을 위한 개선 방안을 제안하는 데 있다. 이를 위해 경상남도 교육청과 진주시 교육청의 다문화 교육정책을 살펴보았고, 한국어 교육 프로그램을 실시하는 진주시 초등학교와 중학교를 대상으로 설문조사를 하고 면담을 실시하였다. 진주지역에서 시행 중인 다문화 학생 지원정책 중에서 학생을 대상으로 하는 한국어 교육 프로그램은 ‘거점형 다문화교육센터’, ‘찾아가는 한국어 교육’, ‘다문화 학생 맞춤형 교육’이 있다. 또 결혼이주여성을 대상으로 하는 ‘진주다문화가정 한국어교실’과 다문화 학생을 대상으로 이중언어 교육을 하는 ‘토요 무지개교실’이 있다. 한국어 교육 프로그램은 예산과 운영방식에 차이가 있었다. 거점형 다문화교육센터는 서부경남 전체 다문화 학생을 대상으로 한국어 교육을 하는 데에 비해 찾아가는 한국어 교육과 다문화 학생 맞춤형 교육은 학교 단위의 한국어 교육을 하였다. 거점형 다문화교육센터와 찾아가는 한국어 교육은 외부 한국어 교사가 수업을 하고, 다문화 학생 맞춤형 교육은 담임 또는 국어 교사가 한국어 수업을 맡고 있었다. 다문화 학생의 유형과 한국어 수준에 따라 수업 내용도 차이가 있었다. 국내출생 다문화 학생을 대상으로 기초학력 보충을 위한 학습한국어 중심의 한국어 교육이 이루어졌다. 한국어로 의사소통이 어려운 중도 입국과 외국인 가정 학생의 경우, 담당 한국어 교사는 전문성과 경험 부족으로 부담감을 가지고 있었다. 주당 한국어 수업의 시수가 가장 높은 프로그램은 찾아가는 한국어 교육이었고, 다문화 학생 맞춤형 교육은 예산 부족 때문에 충분한 한국어 수업을 하고 있지 못한 것으로 드러났다, 다문화 학생들은 한국어 교육이 교우관계와 학업성취도에 큰 영향을 미친다고 인식하였으며, 말하기를 가장 좋아하고 쓰기를 가장 어렵다고 하였다. 진주지역 다문화 학생을 위한 효율적인 한국어 교육 개선 방안으로, 한국어 교사의 전문성 지원, 한국어 교재에 대한 지원, 다문화 학생에 대한 체계적인 지원체계 확보, 교육기관 간의 연대와 협조 등을 제안하였다.
