      이 연구는 제임스 스마트(James D. Smart)의 교육사상을 고찰하고, 스마트의 교육사상 틀에서 김기동의 교육사상의 특징을 탐색하여, 성경 안에서기독교교육의 정체성을 찾고, 예수그리스도와 초대교회의 교육의 원형으로 되돌아가야할 필요성을 제시하는데 그 목적을 두고 있다.
      신정통주의 신학에 기초하여 교육이론을 펼쳐나간 스마트는 예수 그리스도와 초대교회가 가졌던 교육목적에 근거하여, 복음과 말씀의 증언자가 되는 제자직(discipleship)으로의 참여를 교육목적으로 설정한다. 스마트는 이와 같은 교육목적을 구현하기 위한 교육프로그램은 성경에 기초를 두어야 한다고 주장한다. 그는 성경교육을 위한 일곱 가지 적용내용을 제시하고,
      기독교교육의 이론적 기초로서 신학이 중요하다는 입장을 밝히고 있다. 가정과 교회 그리고 공교육을 시행하는 교육기관을 스마트는 기독교교육의 현장으로 제시하고 있다.
      김기동은 교회의 교육적 기능을 논증하고, 예수 그리스도와 신약교회에 근거하여 예수의 증인, 영적 지도자를 양성하는 것을 교육목적으로 설정한다. 그는 교육목적을 구현하기위해 교육내용의 중심은 성경이어야 함을 주장하고, 말씀에의 순종과 말씀의 체험, 그리고 성경이 바탕이 된 신학을 강조하면서 이를 평신도가 겸비해야할 요건으로 제시하고 있다. 김기동은 가정과 교회를 기독교교육의 현장으로 인식하고 있다.
      스마트와 김기동의 교육사상을 고찰한 결과, 스마트의 교육사상 체계 안에서 김기동의 기독교교육사상은 충분히 설명되어진다. 스마트와 김기동의 교육사상은 교회와 교육의 유기적 관계를 강조하는 교회중심적인 특징을 보여 준다. 스마트가 고안한 교육프로그램의 근거는 하나님의 말씀으로서의 그리스도의 사건이며, 이것을 증거하는 성경이다. 김기동의 교육사상도 성
      경중심 정신에 뿌리를 내리고 있다. 교육내용뿐만 아니라 교육목적의 설정에 있어서도 성경 특히 신약교회에 준거하고 있다. 스마트와 김기동은 예수그리스도와 신약교회 교육으로의 복귀를 주장하며, 예수의 제자로의 초대 혹은 예수의 증인 양성에 교육목적을 두고 있음이 발견된다.
      본 연구의 결론은 다음과 같다. 첫째, 스마트의 교육사상 체계 안에서 김기동의 교육사상이 충분히 조망될 수 있다는 사실은 김기동을 기독교교육학자로 바라볼 수 있는 시각을 제공해 준다. 둘째, 스마트와 김기동은 성경으로 돌아가 성경 안에서 기독교교육의 정체성을 찾아야 된다는 강한 메시지를 제시하고 있다.
