水原과 華城의 固有地名 硏究 : 梅花里의 地名解釋을 중심으로

Both 水原 and 華城郡 are place names which are related to 'water'. They reflect the geographical features which protrude from the land, and are adjacent to the West Sea. They refer to villages where there is an abundantance of water, or villages which protrude into the sea. They adopted different literal names because of 'Chaja pyogibup'. However, they orginated from the same derivation in meaning.
We may trace the origin of '水原' from '牟水國' in '馬韓' over the period of tree kingdoms. '牟水' was spelled '買忽' during the Kogureou period and it was changed to 水城 or 水州 while changing from the Chinese lettering system when King Kyoung-duck ruled Shilla. Therefore '水' of '牟水國' and '買' of '買忽' are the 'Cha-eum' borrowed sound of the same word.
When King Chung-jo ruled the country, '華城' was also used with 水原. '水' of 水原, meaning 'water'. '華' of 華城 was read '곶' in the fifteenth Century, and the meaning of 곶 [花ㆍ華] was used as a variation of it, meaning 곶(串). All these examples show that '梅' and '花' were used as Chaja-pyugi, which borrows sounds and meaning from the old letters.
First, '梅' was changed by Chaja-pyugi, with 買 or 牟, meaning water. When 買 is the first letter of the word it corresponds to'水'. Thus, we may find that '梅' of 梅花里, in Hwasung-gun, Seoshin-myun, is Chaja-pyugi, and corresponds to '買' when it is the first letter of the word, meaning '水'.
Second, '花(華)' was changed to '串' by Chaja-pyugi without changing the meaning. 고지ㆍ곶(串) was the same sound as 곶[花] in the fifteenth Century, and 곶 was read with various sounds, such as 곳ㆍ□ㆍ��花].
'梅' of 梅花里 is Chaja-pyugi of '買' and means '水'. '花' of 梅花里 is Chaja-pyugi of '串' and means '華'. That is, 곶[串ㆍ岬] was changed to 곶(花ㆍ華) and then changed to 꽃(花ㆍ華).
All this information show that '水' of '水原' means 'water' and '華' of '華城' means 곶(串). Therefore, the derivation of '梅花' is '水原ㆍ華城' and the place names of '水原ㆍ華城' imply 'water valley'
