The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of REBT group counseling on lightening the irrational belief of secondary students with hearing impairment.
Two hypotheses were formulated in this study:
Hypothesis 1. Hearing-impaired students who receive REBT group counseling might change their irrational belief into statistically significantly more rational one than hearing-impaired students who don't.
Hypothesis 2. Hearing-impaired students who receive REBT group counseling might continue to change their irrational belief into statistically significantly more rational one than hearing-impaired students who don't on retention test.
The subjects in this study were 30 boys and girls from two different schools. Out of them, 15 students were selected from among the hearing-impaired secondary students without any multiple handicaps in K school in the city of Chuncheon, and they were grouped into an experimental group. The other 15 hearing-impaired students who were selected as a control group attended S school in north Chungcheong province. The selected two schools were placed in similar circumstances.
The instrument used on the pretest, posttest and retention test was Kim Hwa-suk(1993)'s Personal Belief Inventory, and a REBT group counseling program that was reconstructed to suit the hearing-impaired students was conducted in 10 sessions.
The collected data were analyzed with SPSS(Statistical Package for the Social Science) WIN 13.0 program. To see if the experimental and control groups were equivalent, t-test was implemented, and statistical data on mean and standard deviation were obtained to find out the immediate and prolonged effects of the REBT group counseling on the irrational belief of the hearing-impaired students. Besides, ANCOVA was utilized.
The major findings of the study were as follows:
First, ANCOVA was employed to track any possible changes in the irrational belief of the experimental group and the control group, and there were significant disparities between the experimental group, which was exposed to the REBT group counseling, and the control group, which wasn't, in needs for approval, self-expectation, disposition of blame, frustrative response, emotional irresponsibility, overanxiety, problem avoidance, dependence, helplessness, excessive care about others and perfectness. It indicated that the REBT group counseling had an effect on easing irrational belief.
Second, the retention test data was analyzed to determine whether the change of the hearing-impaired students who received the REBT group counseling remained the same. When their retention test scores were compared with the pretest ones, there appeared significant differences in needs for approval, self-expectation, disposition of blame, frustrative response, emotional irresponsibility, overanxiety, problem avoidance, dependence, helplessness, excessive care about others and perfectness. It showed that the REBT group counseling produced lasting effects.
