From the perspective of environmental education in art education, this study proposed and implemented an eco-friendly art education program that can help learners form an aesthetic perspectives on nature and motivate learners to practice eco-friendly life.
To this end, we grasp the aesthetic characteristics of nature by carefully observing ecology and nature, and carried out an upcycling activity to produce works of art using waste paper that can be easily found in daily life. In order to use upcycling art as a tool for eco-friendly art education programs, we analyzed the concept of upcycling art and the case of the work. And in accordance with the trend of the times to overcome the climate and environmental crisis, we laid the basis for the need to implement art education from the perspective of environmental education, and laid the foundation for research by analyzing the direction of the current curriculum and the 2022 revised curriculum in order to derive the link between environmental education and art education.
Based on these grounds, a total of three eco-friendly art education programs were proposed and implemented in this study. For this purpose, the following three programs were composed. First, ‘Sensory UP, Find the hidden pattern of plants!’ which is an plant drawing activity drawn on the waste paper, and second, 'Pop-up!, Radiate the charm of plants', which is made of a pop-up card using waste paper and decorated with plant drawings, and third, 'Book up, a plant growth diary I raised' that records the process of plant growth using an old book. These three programs consisted of a total of 12 times, and over a six-week period of November-December 2021 for 73 third-year middle school girls, resulting in the following results and testimonials from learners:
First, learners became deeply observing nature, recognizing their relationship with ecology, plants, and nature, creating aesthetic perspectives on nature, and became interested in nature, ecology, and the environment.
Second, in this program, learners were able to experience eco-friendly living practices through upcycling art using waste paper instead of new paper. As a result, they felt novelty, joy, and satisfaction about eco-friendly practices, and a change in the perception that eco-friendly life practices are possible in everyday life has occurred.
Third, it has made a shift in the learners' thinking about the realm of art. Experiencing the necessity and possibility of eco-friendly choices in art activities, considering the environment and expanding the perception of the realm of art for the environment.
Therefore, this study gave learners the motivation to practice eco-friendly life through the conversion of thinking about eco-friendly living, and that they realized the mystery and unique beauty of nature. However, if the process of stimulating ecological sensitivity obtained through ecological and natural appreciation and experience using the sensory factors of learners, and explores the real causes of environmental problems on their own, it was shown that the effect of environmental education through art education would have been greater. In this era where human lifestyle changes are needed in the era of the climate and environmental crisis, the study is significance of this study in proposing, implementing ways for eco-friendly practice in art education and deriving the expected effects.
