Staphylococcal enterotoxins are major causes of food poisoning in man and animals and staphylococcal enterotoxin B (SEB) was purified to homogenesity in a single polypeptide chain with molecular weight of 28 KDa. Also, a partial fragment of SEB was cloned from Staphylococcus aureus using PCR technique. The SEB gene was subcloned into plasmid vector pGEX and expressed in Escherichia coli. The molecular weight of the recombinant protein was 45 kDa as expected. When the recombinant SEB protein has been purified, it was reacted with both polyclonal and monoclonal antibodies in Western blot analysis. The monoclonal antibodies could recognize native SEB as well as recombinant SEB. This suggest that the recombinant SEB are reacted in the same way as native SEB, serologically.
