This study compares and investigates the image of traditional fairy tales between the text book of elementary school in Korea and Japan after the year of 1945. Also, this study reviews the cultural exchange between Korea and Japan through the process that encompasses the inflow of traditional fairy tales which regarded as a treasury of national literature into a forms of modern media - text book.
It is required to have continuous attention for the elementary education which affects the process of the form of personality and the future of mother country, The traditional fairy tales provide much lessons to solve the internal problems of human beings than any other types of juvenile literatures. Thus it is concluded that the traditional fairy tales, as a teaching material, not only the aspect of the education but also the literature and the psychology support higher level of expectation effect. This study examines the image of the teaching material focused on the published Japanese elementary school text book and the literature in translation reviewed by the comparison between traditional fairy tales in text book and the origin of the traditional fairy tales.
First, the [Tiger and playing a pipe] published by Osho in 1989 is the revision of 'Shaman Tiger' in korean traditional fairy tale. Second, [The Three Year Pass] published by Mitsumura in 1992 is compared to the japanese legend 'Sannen Zaka'. Third, [Lessenless rice sheaf] published in 1996 by Dosho is familiar to almost of the Korean. That is also published in korean text book as the name of [A devoted brothers] based on the real story. Fourth, [Clever tale of Taewook] published in 2000 by Dosho is a background of traditional school in Choseon Dynasty period, and it replaces the [Lessenless rice sheaf]. Fifth, [A dog steals the fire] published in 2000 by Goshutsu based on the korean traditional story of 'Fire Dog' which describe the a lunar eclipse and a solar eclipse.
From the conclusion of the above review, most of published korean fairy tales have amusing stories because the readers of text book are mainly composed of low grade elementary school. The objective of every lesson which include korean traditional fairy tales is to lead the self-oriented intention to read. However, some of traditional fairy tales are not accord with the objectives which intend to provide various cultural aspect of foreign countries. This study pointed that [The Three Year Pass] which introduced in korean traditional fairy tale in japanese text book, however, the story of [The Three Year Pass] is originated from the japanese traditional fairy tale. Under the rule of Japanese Imperialism, Japanese colonial education authorities published the [The Three Year Pass] as disguised korean traditional fairy tales to remove all superstitions. Consequently, this study raise a question about the situation that [The Three Year Pass] became generally known as korean traditional fairy tale in japanese elementary school text book. Additionally, some japanese literatures show that the pass in [The Three Year Pass] is locates in some place in Kyonsang province. Thus, it is necessary that more in depth research be performed. In [Tiger and playing a pipe], japanese text book chooses the tiger story, however, the frequency of tiger story in korean traditional fairy tales are relatively a small number. Also, [A devoted brothers] is not a traditional fairy tale but a real story.
As a part of literature in translation, most of traditional fairy tales in japanese text book have more delicate description and specific composition. Such an effort help children raise the intention to read. Also, a narrative style which mainly focuses on the action of characters is widely implemented in text book.
This study reviews the korean traditional fairy tales published in text book of japanese elementary school, however, it can not review all of relative literatures. Also, it is required that both literature and educational approaches be taken to understand the literary work in the text book. This study has limitation that only literature approach is conducted. It is needed that the approaches to gain the educational meaning of traditional fairy tales in elementary school text book should be performed.
