Hazardous vibration problems in cable-stayed bridges have been reported lately with the trend of long span over the world. This study proposes the procedures for investigating the vibration of stay cables according to the criteria for each typical vibration phenomena and design of most appropriate mitigation measures for problematic vibration. Finally the proposed procedures are applied to real cable-stayed bridge in order to examine the applicability and versatility. This study considers vortex-induced vibration, galloping, wake galloping, rain-wind-induced vibration and deck or tower induced vibration as a possible hazardous vibration of stay cable. Considered measures for mitigating the vibration are increasing damping and subsidiary cable tie. Used two criteria to identify which is hazardous vibration and whether measures are required or not are the vibration amplitude of stay cable and if considered serious vibration happens. Proposed procedures enable to investigate the vibration of stay cable systematically and of which vibration mitigation methods are appropriate. This verification results from the application of proposed procedure to real cable-stayed bridge, and the results of decision are rational and coincide with previous experience. However it should be noted that the proposed procedure and criteria may not give the exact results about the vibration of stay cables which are very complicate interaction phenomena with related to wind, rain, vibration of deck or tower and cable itself, Proposed procedure may help saving time and consistency when investigating vibration of stay cables.
