한국 종교생태운동의 '생태의례' 연구

At numerous scenes of Korean ecological movements, we can find very significant phenomena which can be characterized as the appropriation of religious rituals and the invention of new rituals. In the field of eco-resistant movements against rapid development works led by government or major companies, eco-rituals have a sort of political dimension as a kind of resistant activity. Therefore, in contemporary Korean society very heated debates are occurring about the decision whether each eco-ritual performed at the field of eco-resistant movement is a religious ritual or just a kind of power play disguised as religion.
However, rituals performed at the fields of eco-resistant movements should not be regarded just as the ‘material force’ or only as a means of disturbing construction works. In this research, I examined the performances of religious rituals & the invention of new rituals at the field of ecological movements, and the ritualization of ecological movement itself focusing on the perception of the environment and self through bodily experiences during ritual performances. Especially, I analyzed the interactive effects of eco-rituals which work between ritual environment and ritual participants.

국문 초록 (Abstract)

최근 한국사회의 생태운동 현장에서는 종교의례의 전유 및 새로운 의례의 창안 현상이 두드러지게 나타나고 있다. 특히 정부나 대기업 주도 개발사업에 반대하는 현장에서의 생태의례들은 일종의 저항행위로서 정치적 차원을 지닌다. 따라서 저항적 생태운동 현장의 각종 의례들이 과연 종교 의례인지 아니면 소위 ‘종교의 탈을 쓴’ 위력행사인지에 대한 논란이 벌어지기도 한다.
그런데 저항적 생태운동 현장에서의 종교의례는 단지 공사를 방해하고 인원을 동원하는 수단으로서 ‘물리적 힘’으로만 규정될 수 없다. 본 연구에서는 생태운동의 현장에서 일어나는 종교의례의 수행 및 새로운 의례 창안, 나아가 운동 자체의 의례화 현상을 몸의 경험을 통한 환경, 자아, 상황 인식 및 그 공고화라는 측면에서 살펴보았다. 특히 ‘감각’에 초점을 맞춤으로써 현장성과 몸의 경험, 그리고 환경과 의례참여자와의 상호작용적인 측면을 조명하였다.
구체적으로 본 연구에서는 (1)한국 생태운동의 현장에서 ‘의례’가 부각되는 배경으로서 생태환경에 대한 상반된 시각의 대립이 중요한 역할을 하고 있음을 제시하고, 장소에 대한 ‘감각’의 회복과 저항의 전략으로서 생태의례가 부각되게 되는 맥락을 설명하였다. 또한 (2) 개발로 인해 파괴될 위험에 처한 현장인 ‘그곳’에서 수행되는 도보순례 현상을 분석하였다. (3) 나아가 저항적 생태운동의 긴박한 대치 상황에서 수행되는 의례에 초점을 두고, ‘그곳’에서 어떠한 일이 일어나는지를 (a)의례적 환경의 조성, (b)장소감의 형성과 의례화된 주체의 탄생, (c)감각-가치의 코뮤니타스 형성, (d)이미지와 이야기의 확산 등의 소주제들을 통해 분석하였다.
