한국 대학생의 영어 읽기 관련 어휘 학습전략에 대한 연구

국문 초록 (Abstract)

본 연구는 우리나라 EFL 대학생들이 읽기과업 중 어휘 학습을 위해 사용하는 읽기관련 어휘 학습전략에 대한 탐구와 영어 어휘 수준과 전략과의 관계를 검증하였다. 부산, 경남 지역의 4년제 대학교 4곳에서 교양영어나 영어독해와 같은 영어 읽기가 주된 과업인 수업을 수강하고 있는 대학생 344명을 대상으로 읽기관련 어휘학습전략 설문과 어휘수준시험 결과를 토대로 자료분석을 실시하였다. 탐색적 요인분석을 통해 EFL 상황에 적합한 읽기관련 어휘 학습전략의 문항들을 구성하고 있는 하위요인들을 살펴본 결과, 총 6개의 구성요인이 도출되었으며, 이론적 배경과 각 요인을 구성하는 문항의 공통된 특징에 따라 어휘인지전략 (word noticing strategy), 형식 및 의미관련 전략 (form & meaning-related strategy), 추측전략 (guessing strategy), 확인전략(confirmation strategy), 기억전략 (memorization strategy), 확장전략(extended strategy)을 하위 요인으로 구성하였고, 도출된 총 6개의 하위 전략 중에서 어휘발견 전략의 사용 빈도가 가장 높은 것으로 나타났으며, 형태 및 의미 전략, 추측전략, 확인전략, 기억전략, 확장전략을 포함한 나머지 5가지 하위전략은 중간 정도의 사용빈도로 나타났다. 영어 어휘 수준에 따른 상, 중, 하 3개의 집단 별 읽기관련 어휘학습전략을 비교해본 결과, 기억 전략을 제외한 나머지 5개의 하위 전략에서 통계적으로 유의한 차이가 있는 것으로 나타났다. 읽기관련 어휘학습전략이 어휘수준에 미치는 영향에 대한 예측도를 살펴본 결과, 총 6개의 하위 전략 중에서 형태 및 의미전략, 추측전략, 어휘발견전략을 포함한 3개의 전략이 어휘수준에 통계적으로 유의하게 영향을 미치는 것으로 나타났다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

This study investigated EFL learners’ use of reading-related vocabulary learning strategies and the relationship between these strategies and their vocabulary size. 344 EFL students taking reading courses at four universities in Busan and Kyungnam areas participated in the study. The results of exploratory factor analysis suggested a six-factor model including word noticing strategy, form & meaning-related strategy, guessing strategy, confirmation strategy, memorization strategy, and extended strategy. Among six factors, word noticing strategy was the most frequently used ones, and the other five sub-strategies were used less frequently by the EFL students in Korea. In addition, the result of comparing the differences of reading-related vocabulary strategies depending on their vocabulary size level showed that there were significant mean differences in the five strategies except for memory strategy. The predictability of vocabulary learning strategies to vocabulary size indicated three strategies including form & meaning-related strategy, guessing strategy, word noticing strategy have the most ability to predict vocabulary size.
