The Role of Aspect in Deverbal Nominalization in Russian

국문 초록 (Abstract)

러시아어 동사 어간은 다양한 접미사와 결합하여 다양한 어휘 유형을 가지는 파생명사를 생성한다. 상(aspect)의 관점에서 러시아어 동사는 일반적으로 불완료체와 완료체로 구성되어 있다. 그러나 동사의 상은 명사의 어휘범주로 표현되지 않기 때문에, 동사범주는 명사화과정에서 상쇄된다는 관점이 일반적이다. 본 연구에서는 명사화과정에서 상과 접미사의 선택에 어떤 원칙이 존재하는지, 그리고 동사의 상이 파생명사의 의미에 어떤 영향을 주는지 살펴본다. 일반적으로 동작의 의미를 가지는 파생명사는 불완료체에서 파생(예: ？tenie‘읽기, 읽는 행위’ ＜ ？itat’ ‘읽다[불완료체]’)되는 반면, 결과의 의미를 중시하는 파생명사는 완료체에서 파생(예: pro？tenie ‘통독’＜ pro？est’ ‘읽다[완료체]’)된다. 동사 불완료체가 행위, 동작의 과정이라는 의미를 내포하고, 완료체가 행위, 동작의 완료라는 의미를 내포하고 있다는 관점에서 위 결과는 당연하다고 볼 수 있다. 그러나 예외라고 할 수 없을 정도의 많은 예들이 위의 일반화에 다른 논증을 제시한다. 예를 들면, re？at’[불완]/re？it’[완] ‘해결하다, 결정하다’는 단 하나의 파생명사 re？enie를 가지는데, 이 명사는 해결/결정의 행위뿐만이 아니라 동시에 완료적 의미의 해결/결정을 뜻한다. 본 연구에서는 이와 같은 현상이 일어나는 과정을 다음과 같이 설명하고 있다; 두 가지 잠재적인 파생명사화(행위명사와 완료명사)가 동시에 가능할 경우, 두 가지 형태의 파생명사가 기저구조에서 생성되며, 그 중 하나가 보다 부각되어 어휘화되고, 두 가지 의미를 모두 가지게 된다. 또한, 명사가 문자그대로의 의미를 반영할 때는, 그 명사는 일반적으로 불완료체에서 파생(예: otkryvatel’ ‘(병)따개’)되는 반면, 명사가 비유적이고 은유적인 의미를 반영할 때는, 일반적으로 완료체에서 파생(otkrytie ‘발견’)됨을 볼 수 있다. 본 논문은 위에서 제시한 상의 선택이 조어론적인 관점에서 어떻게 설명 될 수 있는 가를 결론적으로 제시하고 있다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

Russian verb stems combine with a number of different noun-forming suffixes in the derivation morphology, creating nominalizations of various semantic types (agent, instrument, action, result, etc.) Russian verbal lexemes are normally analyzed as consisting of a linked pair of verbs, differing in terms of the verbal category of aspect. But aspect is not expressed as a semantic category of nouns. Therefore, the verbal category is neutralized in the process of nominalization. This paper examines the principles by which the system of Russian derivational morphology chooses which aspect from the underlying lexical pair to add a particular suffix to, and the impact of the underlying aspect on the meaning of the resulting noun. A range of aspect-related generalizations pertaining to word formation are proposed. For example, when a noun reflects the literal or physical meaning of the verb, it is common that it is built upon the imperfective aspect (e.g., otkryvatel’ ‘opener[for cans or bottles]’), whereas figurative or metaphorical meanings are more often built upon the perfective aspect (otkrytie ‘discovery’). The paper concludes with a discussion of how the need to maintain a potential aspect feature can be met in a more theoretical model of word formation.
