‘우리 마누라’와 험티덤티 문제 = ‘Uri Manura’ and Humpty Dumpty Problem

국문 초록 (Abstract)

일부일처제가 비교적 엄격한 혼인제도로 자리잡은 한국사회에서 복수 일인칭 대명사를 포함하는 ‘우리 마누라’라는 한국어 표현이 폭넓게 사용된다는 사실은 상당히 흥미로운 언어현상임이 분명하다. 어떻게 한국어를 사용하는 유부남들이 ‘우리 마누라’를 사용하여 자신의 부인을 가리킬 수 있는지에 대한 체계적인 설명이 요구된다 하겠다. 정대현은 최근 한정기술구에 대한 도널렌의 속성적/지칭적 용법의 구분을 통하여 그러한 설명을 시도하지만, 그것은 곧 강진호의 반대논변에 직면한다. 이런 배경 하에서 본 논문은 ‘우리 마누라’에 대한 정대현의 설명, 그리고 그에 대한 강진호의 반대 논변을 비판적으로 검토하는 것을 목적으로 한다. 먼저 필자는 정대현에 대한 강진호의 반대논변이 충분히 견고하지 못하다는 것을 논증할 것이다. 그럼에도 불구하고 필자는 ‘우리 마누라’에 대한 정대현의 설명이 틀렸다는 강진호의 생각에 동의하고, 이에 정대현에 대한 한층 견고한 반대논변을 제시할 것이다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

Monogamy has been a strict social norm for Koreans for centuries. Curiously enough, however, the expression, ‘Uri manura’, whose wordfor-word English translation is ‘Our wife’, has wide currency among Korean speakers. How is it possible that a Korean-speaking husband can refer to his wife by using ‘Uri manura’? This cries out for a systematic theoretical explanation, semantic and/or pragmatic. Professor Daehyun Chung gives a shot at such an explanation by relying on Donnellan’s famous distinction between the referential/attributive uses of definite descriptions. But this has come in for Professor Jinho Kang’s severe criticism. Against this backdrop, the goal of this paper is to bring under scrutiny Chung’s explanation of how ‘Uri manura’ works and Kang’s criticism of it. Keeping this in mind, I will first find faults with Kang’s criticism and pronounce that it doesn’t hold water. But this doesn’t mean that I find Chung’s explanation agreeable. On the contrary, I will present what I take to be decisive criticisms of it, which is hoped to demonstrate, once and for all, that Chung’s explanation is a mistake.
