혁거세신화를 통해 본 서라벌소국의 형성

국문 초록 (Abstract)

현재 박씨 성을 가진 한국인이 많다는 사실로 보아 결국은 혁거세(赫居世)를 시조로 하는 씨족(氏族)이 현재 한국인의 다수가 될 정도로 번성한 것을 알 수 있다. 따라서 본고는 현재 한국을 이해하는 출발점이 되는 것을 알 수 있다. 한국인 정체성의 원점에는 혁거세를 시조로 하는 세력만 있는 것이 아니다. 신라 건국신화에 나오는 6촌장을 시조로 하는 씨족과 탈해를 시보로 하는 씨족, 알지를 시조로 하는 씨족 등이 있다. 이들에 대해 후대 사람들이 칭하던 명칭이 있다. 신라의 왕을 배출했던 씨족은 후대에 종성(宗姓) 또는 천강성(天降姓)이라 불렀다. 그런가 하면 혁거세를 추대했다고 하는 서라벌6촌장을 시조로 하는 씨족이 가졌던 성을 육부성(六部姓) 또는 토성(土姓)이라고 불렀다.
그런데 근현대 한국사학은 종성과 육부성 중 혁거세를 시조로 하는 박씨족 만이 아니라, 다른 씨족들의 존재를 주목하지 않았다. 한국인 정체성의 원점을 은폐해 온 것이다. 고구려나 백제인들이 아니라 신라인들을 시조로 하는 성이나 본관을 가진 한국인이 많다는 사실은 신라가 한국인의 오리진이라는 것을 뜻한다. 그 중에서도 신라 건국신화를 포함해 신라 초기 역사가 바로 한국인 정체성의 원점이 된다.
이 같이 신라 오리진의 한국인을 만든 출발점은 혁거세가 건국한 신라에 있는 것도 사실이다. 그런데 현대 한국사학은 혁거세를 푸대접해왔다. 현대 한국사학은 혁거세 그리고 혁거세를 시조로 하는 박씨 성을 가진 씨족의 존재도 인정하지 않고 있는 것이다. 쓰다 소키치에서 시작했고 이병도 선생이 이어받은 이 같은 주장은 본질적인 오류를 안고 있는 것이다.
그러나 실제 역사는 근현대 한국사학이 만들어낸 것과 다른 것이었다. 신라의 모체가 된 서라벌소국을 세운 혁거세를 신라인들은 처음부터 기억했다. 다른 나라도 마찬가지지만 신라의 왕들도 건국신화나 시조에 대한 설화를 통해 정통성을 얻고, 계보파악을 통해 왕의 지위의 정당성을 얻었고, 시조묘나 신궁의 제사를 통해 왕의 권위나 권력을 확인할 수 있었다. 혁거세의 후손들은 혁거세를 모신 시조묘 제사와 혁거세왕릉의 존재를 통해 그들의 지위를 확보할 수 있었다. 따라서 혁거세는 신라 초기부터 신라인들의 기억 속에서 지워질 수 없는 신성한 존재였다. 이병도 선생이 신라 왕의 세계(世系)의 확실성에 대해 의문을 가진 자체가 신라의 역사를 이해하지 못한 것이다.
지금까지 제국 일본의 한국인 폐멸정책을 위해 희생된 한국사, 상처받은 신라의 역사, 그렇게 지워진 혁거세를 살려내고 한국인 정체성의 원점을 되찾는 작업이 이루어져야 한다. 본고는 그 출발점이 될 것이다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

It could be inferred the clan, which progenitor was Hyeok’geo’se, has flourished in Korea, since there are many Koreans who has family name ‘Park’. Therefore, this article will be a starting point to understand present of Korea. The origin of Korean identities are not only consisted with clan which progenitor was Hyeok’geo’se. According to Silla National Origin Myth, there are clans which progenitor were Six Chonjang, Talhae and Alji. There were titles about these family clans that later generation had designated. The clan that produced King of Silla was called Jongseong or Chungangseong by later generation. The clans, which progenitors were Seorabol Six Chonjang and whom appointed Hyeok’geo’se as their leader, called their family name as Youkbuseong or Toseong.
However, Modern and Contemporary Korean History had not focused on Jongseong and Youkbuseong which progenitor was Hyeok’geo’se as well as the presence of other clans. This research tendency means to conceal Korean identity. There are many Korean family names or family clans which progenitor was from Silla, not from Koguryo or Baekje, and it could be inferred that Korean origins are related with Silla. Above all, Early Silla History including Silla National Origin Myth contains starting point of Korean origins.
As it was inferred in previous paragraph, Silla origins which indicated starting point of Korean is related with Silla founded by Hyeok’geo’se. However, Contemporary Korean History neglects Hyeok’geo’se. Contemporary Korean History does not acknowledge Hyeok’geo’se and his clan with family name Park. This trend of argument, which had started by Professor Tsuda Sōkichi and was inherited to Professor Lee Byung-Do, contains critical problems.
Real Korean History is different with what Modern and Contemporary Korean History has created. Silla people remembered Hyeok’geo’se who had founded Seorabol community that were developed into Silla. Similar with other countries, Kings of Silla secured their legitimacy by Silla National Origin Myth or tales of progenitors, gained authority as king by tracing genealogy, and assure their power or dignity by tomb of their progenitor or ancestrial rites in palace. The descendent of Hyeok’geo’se had secured their authority by ancestrial rites on their progenitor, Hyeok’geo’se, and existence of Royal Tomb of Hyeok’geo’se. Therefore, existence of Hyeok’geo’se was sacred to Silla people from Early Silla History. Professor Lee Byung-Do’s question related to existence of the Silla Kings genealogy proves that he did not understand history of Silla.
Victimized Korean history by Korean Ethnic Extermination Policy during Imperial Japan, scarred history of Silla, and erased Hyeok’geo’se should be restored, and Korean origin research should be restarted. This article will be the starting point.
