가치에 대한 반응 : 의존적 분석에 대한 비판적 검토 = Critical Assessments of Response-Dependent Analysis of Value

국문 초록 (Abstract)

가치에 관한 최근의 한 주요 이론에 따르면 한 대상이 가치를 가진다는 사실은 그 대상에 대해 특정 개인이 우호적인 반응을 보인다는 사실에 다름 아니다. 흄에 대한 일부 해석과 색과 가치의 유비를 중시하는 전통을 선조로 가진 이 노선은, 가치판단의 객관성과 규범성을 확보하기 위해 가치를 구성하는 반응과 반응 주체의 자격을 논하면서 다양한 스펙트럼의 이론적 공간을 점유하고 있다. 세부적 차이에도 불구하고 이러한 유형의 입장들의 핵심적 주장은 ‘반응-의존적’ 가치분석이론이라는 명칭을 가능케 하고, 실상 이 명칭 하에 집중된 논의 대상이 되고 있다. 본 논문은 크게 세 가지 방향에서 이 이론을 비판한다. 첫째, 이 이론의 주요 요소인 반응 주체의 자격과 적절한 반응의 형태를 구체적으로 채우려는 과정이 자체적 어려움을 노정할 뿐 아니라(‘이상화’ 전략의 문제점 등), 그 주체의 반응이 실상 대상이 반응 이전에 혹은 반응-독립적으로 가진 패턴을 추적할 가능성과 개연성이 제기된다. 둘째로 이 입장이 가장 친화적으로 연결되는 규범적 입장이 개별주의(particularism)인데 이는 일반적 원리를 중심으로 한 대부분의 주요 규범이론들의 실패를 전제로 하는 부담을 가진다. 마지막으로 이 이론이 자신의 장점으로 내세우는 여러 규범적 현상들에 대한 설명이 반응-독립적 이론들에 의해 보다 적절한 수준에서 제시될 수 있다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

On one of the recent major theories of value, the fact that an object has a value property is just the fact that a subject satisfying certain qualifications would respond to that object favorably. As a descendant of (the official interpretation of) Hume's value theory and the venerable tradition attaching great importance to the analogy between color and value, this view commands a wide range of theoretical possibilities. Sub-divisions within this view largely come from various ways of characterizing the nature of the relevant response and the qualifications of the responder. This paper presents three types of criticism against core theses of 'response-dependent' theories of moral value. First, we shall face a dilemma in the process of filling in the central elements of the theory, i.e., the response and the qualifications of the responder. Perfect, idealized responders and their response would be out of our (human) cognitive reach, and there is an eminent possibility that people with morally improved sensibilities around us are in fact responding to response-independent patterns exemplified by the objects of their moral judgment. Second, the most congenial normative partner of response-dependent value theory is particularism, and the latter has its own enormous normative burdens and tasks. Finally, most explanatory efficacies this theory advertises as their advantages can be offered by response-independent theories on a more adequate level.
