Substantial number of studies on mechanism of abortion and premature labor have been reported, however, dearth of the literature on pathological observation upon abortion is found, As an aid to clarify mechanism of abortion, residual tissue and regenerated endometrial tissue following abortion and premature labor were observed histologically. Results are as follows :
1) Total cases observed, 24 represent hemorrhagic picture in residual tissues following abortion.
2) 14 cases out of 24 show the presence of chorionic villi on the surface of endometrium in various fashion.
3) Hemorrhage, leucocyte infiltration and fibrinoid degeneration are observed in decidual tissues.
4) In cases accompanying marked villous degeneration, hemorrhage usually occurs afterward, whereas in cases with mild villous degeneration, hemorrhage antecedes the villous changes.
5) Degeneration of chorionic villi are observed even during the course of threatened abortion.
6) Following abortion, incomplete regeneratoin of endometrium is gradually replaced by proliferative pattern.
7) Residual villi adherent to endometrium cause incomplete regenration of endometrium, thereby produce continuous hemorrhages.
8) Residual villi or decidual tissues cause tardy restoration of the endometrium, assuming functional bleeding.
