루마니아 신화에 내재된 민간신앙과 동방정교의 문화적 융합 양상 = Aspects of cultural interaction among the Orthodox and traditional religions, appeared in romanian myths

국문 초록 (Abstract)

루마니아 땅에 보편 종교인 크리스트교가 전파된 것은 지금부터 약 2000여 년 전의 일이다. 예수의 12제자 중 한 명인 안드레이가 흑해변의 도브로제아(Dobrogea) 지방에서 예수의 복음을 전했다는 기록과 기념물이 이러한 사실을 증명한다. 하지만 크리스트교의 전래 역사가 오래 되었다고 해서 고대의 민간 신앙이나 그것과 연관된 다양한 민속 전통들까지 모두 배타적이고 독선적인 크리스트교의 종교체계 아래로 흡수되어 그 자취를 완전히 감추어 버린 것은 아니었다. 루마니아에서는 오히려 현재까지도 고대의 신앙과 풍습에서 비롯되었다고 추정되는 여러 속신, 미신 등의 민속 문화들이 원형에 가깝게 보존되고 있다. 이러한 이유는, 크리스트교가 초월적인 삶의 문제는 해결해 주었지만 현세적인 삶의 문제는 거의 해결해 주고 있지 못하기 때문이다. 크리스트교는 예수의 죽음과 부활을 통해 인간의 원죄를 대속할 것을 약속했고, 예수의 재림을 통해 인간에게 영생을 줄 것을 약속하는 등, 영적인 근본 문제들에 대해서 해결책을 제시하기는 했지만, 인간들이 현세에서 겪는 소소한 질병이나 수시로 변하는 육체적 불만, 기후의 변화에 따른 불안감 등을 해결하는 방안은 개인적인 기도 외에는 딱히 제시하지 못했다. 하지만 민간 신앙과 민속 의례들은 주술이라는 방법을 통해 소소한 질병들을 치유하거나 육체적 불만을 위무하는 가능성을 제시했고, 기우제나 희생제의 등을 통해 기후 변화에 따른 불안을 진정시키고 풍작에 대한 기대감을 높여주는 등의 기능을 수행하였다. 이러한 이유 때문에, 초월적이고 영적인 문제에 관여하는 보편 종교와 현세적이고 육체적인 문제에 관여하는 민속 신앙은 서로를 보완하면서 융합 될 수밖에 없었던 것이다. 루마니아 인들의 이와 같은 삶의 방식은 루마니아 각 지역에 흩어져 있는 신화들의 내용 속에서도 거의 그대로 반영되어 나타나고 있다. 즉, 신화들의 내용을 살펴보면 그 속에 보편 종교인 동방정교의 영향 뿐 아니라 민간 신앙의 영향이 강하게 융합되어 있음이 드러난다. 미르체아 엘리아데에 의하면 고대의 신화들은 사라진 것이 아니라 단지 그 모습만을 감추고 있기 때문에 보이지 않을 뿐이라고 한다. 신화는 중세 이후의 보편종교, 철학, 과학 등에 의해 철저하게 파괴되어 버린 듯 보이지만 실상은 그들의 뒤편에서 공존하고 있다는 것이다. 루마니아의 시골마을 사람들은 아주 오래전에 이미 기독교화 되었다고는 하지만, 고대로부터 이어온 전통들까지 모두 사라진 것은 아니다. 그들에게 기독교로의 개종은 종교 간의 공존과 융합을 가져다주었을 뿐이다. 일부 도시화된 곳에서는 크리스트교에 의해 고대의 신화와 이교도 신앙들은 모두 배척을 받은 것처럼 보이지만 실상 고대의 신들은 아직까지도 그 영향력을 발휘하고 있는 것이 사실이다. 루마니아의 예를 들자면, 불멸을 가르쳤던 다치아의 잘목시스는 영원한 생명과 구원을 약속한 예수로, 벤디스 여신은 성모 마리아로, 천둥과 번개의 신이었던 트라키아의 제벨레이지스는 성 엘리야로, 카발레룰 트락은 성 게오르게로, 동물들을 다스렸던 이름 모를 신은 성 베드로로 그 모습을 바꾸었다. 그러나 트라키아와 다치아의 신들은 크리스트교 성인들의 이름 뒤편에 숨었을 뿐이지, 아직까지도 그 힘을 고스란히 발산하고 있다. 루마니아의 거의 모든 문화 양식이 외면적으로는 크리스트교화 되었지만, 내면적으로는 고대의 민간 신앙을 계승한 신화-의례적인 민속들을 그대로 유지하고 있는 것은 이러한 이유 때문이다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

One of the feature of Romanian culture is the special relationship between Orthodox doctrine and ancient myths. Although the dominant religion in Romania is the Orthodox and the introduction of Christianity in Romania was a long history, traditional believes derived from ancient paganism has not disappeared. As such, far from coinciding with the story in the Book of Genesis, the Romanian cosmogony is largely dualist in nature, depicting the Earth as the common opus of God and the Devil, imagined as counterparts of the sacred and the profane rather than in the biblical way. This cosmogony says that man’s desire is to give a purpose to every thing and being in order to gain full harmony. In Romania, the ancient gods have had Christian saints' names but their nature power, which is believed from ancient time, still inspire Romanian peasant's spirituality. For examples, Jesus replaced Zalmoxis in Dacia as the Savior, Elijah replaced Gebeleizis as god of the thunder and rain, Gheorghe replaced Cavalerul Trac as the god who expel evils, the Holy Mother Maria replaced Bendis in Trachea or Diana from Roma as goddess of management, Saint Peter replaced anonymous god for wild animals. Whereas in Southeastern Europe inclusive of Romania, Church has been imbued with so many cosmic symbols. The religious experience peculiar to the rural populations was nourished by what Mircea Eliade called, “Cosmic Christianity”. Cosmic Christianity is a peasant-centered religion with its array of cosmic liturgies and religious folklores. It is not a paganization of Christianity and is not expressed by a scholastic theology. It is a popular theology that is built on the meaning and significance of seasonal festivals and religious folklore, which reflect the life of the common folk. Thus, cosmic symbols of folkloric themes are passed on to the Church, which gave them sacramental meaning. Eliade explains Cosmic Christianity of the rural population in Romania as being dominated by 'nostalgia for a Nature sanctified by the presence of Jesus'. Romanian Cosmic Christianity is inherited ancient mythological thinking that god and nature and human being are in unity.
