The hydrogen breath test was performed in 35 Korean healthy adults by ingestion of 18 g lactose and analysis of end-expiratory air.
The results were as follows;
1) Of the 35 subjects, 13 had symptoms and an increase in breath H₂ concentration of ≥20 p,p.m. at some interval during 5 hours collection period after oral 18 g lactose load. (Lactose intolerants)
2) The other 22 subjects did not have an maximal increase of ≥20 p.p.m. although 3 subjects had an increase of 71, 24 and 22 p.p.m. respectively. (Lactose tolerants)
3) The lactose tolerants had no symptoms induced by lactose load.
4) Most of the maximal increase in breath H₂ concentration (in 8 of 13 lactose intolerants) occured after 4th hour of a 5-hours-collection period.
In conclusion, 13(37.5%) of Korean healthy adults could be determined as lactose intolerants by the results of subjective response and the breath H₂ test simultaneously.
And breath H₂ test is a practically useful method for screening of lactose intolerance.
