청년의 일, 여가, 자기개발 실천: 직업 소명의 행위이론 = Work-Leisure Practices among Young Adults in Korea: An Action Theory of Calling in Work

Practices at the intersection of work and leisure vary from individual to individual. Efforts to find patterns out of this variation need to consider that work and leisure are not only correlative but consubstantial with each other. Therefore, how one of the two-especially for work-is practiced affects the manners in which work–leisure practices occur. For explaining this dynamic relationship, this paper first proposes an action theory of ‘calling’, specifically, the ‘calling in work’. From the action theory perspective, career or work performance is perceived as performing of or practicing ‘calling,’ and conceptualized as a process of making one’s ego and her world through her vocation schematically involves individual calling (i.e. calling in ego) and social calling (i.e. calling in alters). Subsequently, from a connectionist approach of the action theory, this study conceptualizes diverse forms of practicing work-leisure into three types: a) work-dominated non-differentiation practice; b) self-development-differentiated practice; and c) leisure-differentiated practice. Applying cluster analysis and multinomial logistic regression models, it found the following. First, young adults take greater individual calling greater than social calling. Second, their work-leisure practices, distinguished by the number of hours spent in daily activities, appear to have a work-dominated non-differentiation practice taking the largest share (50%), followed by a self-development-differentiated practice (7%), and leisure differentiated practice (43%). Third, the higher the sense of calling in work, the more likely young adults show they belong to work-dominated non-differentiation or self-development-differentiated type than leisure-differentiated type. Fourth, as individual calling increases, they are likely to practice self-development-differentiated work-leisure; as social calling increases, they are likely to practice work-dominated non-differentiation work-leisure. Fifth, the association between work-dominated non-differentiation practice and social calling is weakened by individual calling. These results show that the work-leisure practice indeed correlates with the performing of ‘calling’ through vocation. It suggests that understanding practice in calling, the process of making one’s ego and her society, should take precedent than dividing work and leisure exclusively or taking either of the two in the process.

국문 초록 (Abstract)

일과 여가의 실천방식이 다양하다. 두 영역이 연관되어 있으므로 한 영역에서의 실천이 나머지 영역은 물론 둘의 교차로 이뤄지는 실천의 다양한 분기에 영향을 준다. 이에 이 연구는 일과 여가가 서로 구별되면서 동시에 서로 통합되는 것으로 이해하는 행위이론적 개념화를 통해 일-여가 실천의 다양성을 설명한다. 먼저, 자아와 세계의 연결을 강조하는 행위이론 관점에서 일·직업 실천을 소명(calling)의 실천 중 하나로 보고 개인이 직업에서 자아(개인 소명감) 및 세상·사회(사회 소명감)를 구성해가는 과정(직업 소명감)으로 개념화한다. 다음으로 행위이론의 관계론적 시각에서 일-여가 실천의 다양성을 주요한 세 형태로 개념화한다(일 중심 미분화, 자기개발 분화, 여가 분화). 직업 소명감이 어떻게 개인 소명감과 사회 소명감으로 구체화하는지가 일-여가 실천의 다양한 양상과 유의미한 관계를 맺는다고 이론화한다. 경험적으로 한국고용정보원 청년패널 2차년도(2008년) 자료에 군집분석 및 다항 로지스틱 회귀분석을 실시하였다. 첫째, 청년세대는 사회 소명감보다 개인 소명감을 더욱 강하게 느낀다. 둘째, 일상 활동에 사용한 시간을 중심으로 판별해낸 일-여가 실천은 일 중심 미분화(50%), 자기개발 분화(7%), 여가 분화(43%) 등으로 나타난다. 셋째, 직업 소명감이 높을수록 여가 분화보다는 일 중심 미분화 내지 자기개발 분화가 나타난다. 넷째, 개인 소명감이 증가하면 자기개발 분화를, 사회 소명감이 증가하면 일 중심 미분화를 드러낸다. 다섯째, 사회 소명감과 일 중심 미분화 실천이 맺는 관계는, 개인 소명감에 의해 약화된다. 일-여가 실천이라는 과제는 결국 개인이 직업을 매개로 자아, 사회, 혹은 양자 모두를 만들어가는 과정, 즉 직업을 통한 소명의 실천 정도와 연관되어 있음을 이 연구는 주장한다. 일과 여가를 배타적으로 양분하거나 어느 하나로 환원하려기보다 개인이 때로는 일로써 때로는 여가로써 자아와 사회를 구성해가는 본질적 과정, 즉 소명의 실천 과정에 대한 이해가 우선해야 함을 제안한다.
