찰스 디킨스의 『위대한 유산』에 나타난 영국의 1차 산업혁명과 이직의 서사 = The First Industrial Revolution in England and the Narrative of Career Shift in Charles Dickens’ Great Expectations

Charles Dickens’ Great Expectations is one of the most outstanding exemplary English realistic novels in the 19th century, which describes the socioeconomic status in the Industrial Revolution and the condition of the working class in England. The protagonist Pip shows his stages of social development and moral improvement along with his career shift from an errand boy to an apprentice at a blacksmith’s shop and a jobless gentleman aspirant to a staff in an international trading company. Through the narrative of Pip’s job changes and the depiction of other characters’ occupational status, Dickens criticizes the inequality of class and wealth, the confusion of values, the injustice of the court, and the poor environment of London. However, he does not merely protest against the miserable circumstances but presents the optimistic Protestant vision that advocates the individual work ethic, such as integrity, ability, and thrifty to cope with the harsh realities.

국문 초록 (Abstract)

찰스 디킨스의 위대한 유산은 19세기 영국의 대표적인 사실주의 소설로서산업혁명 시대 영국의 현실과 노동자의 상황을 자세히 묘사하고 있다. 주인공핍이 대장간의 심부름꾼에서 견습생으로, 신사교육을 받는 무직자에서 무역회사 직원으로 이직을 겪는 과정은 사회적 성장의 과정이자 도덕적 성숙의 여정이라고 할 수 있다. 디킨스는 핍의 이직의 서사를 통해 계급과 부의 불평등, 가치관의 혼란, 부당한 사법제도, 열악한 도시환경 등을 비판하는 한편, 주변 인물들의 직업적 상황을 묘사하여 바람직한 직업윤리에 대한 통찰을 보여준다. 디킨스는 비참한 현실에 대한 치밀한 묘사에 머물지 않고, 사회․경제적으로 격변하는 산업 혁명의 시대에도 프로테스탄티즘을 바탕으로 한 성실과 유능, 검약이직업인의 미덕임을 시사하며 미래에 대한 낙관적 비전을 제시하고 있다.
