햄릿(Hamlet)의 무대의상 디자인 연구

국문 초록 (Abstract)

연극은 인간의 경험을 관객과 함에 펼쳐놓는 살아있는 종합 예술이다. 새로운 미지의 세계를 표현하며, 극작가와 연출가, 무대미술가와 배우들이 새로운 컨셉에 맞추어 예술을 창출하는 작업이다. 무대의상은 여러 디자인 요소를 응용하여 작품의도와 인물의 성격에 맞게 여러 정보를 시각적으로 이미지화 하여 다양한 각도로 관객에게 전달한다.
연극의 고전이라 불리는 셰익스피어의 희곡 중 "햄릿(Hamlet)"은 삶의 본질과 의미에 대한 질문을 제기하고, 관객으로 하여금 인간의 본성에 대한 다양한 해석의 여지를 갖게 하는 작품이며 무대의상을 통해 다양한 연출 해석의 가능성을 제시해 주는 작품이다. 희곡에서 사용된 언어는 관객들에게 풍부한 상상력과 문제제기를 하지만, 인물의 상징성과 상황표현은 무대의상으로 시각화 할 수 있다. 그럼에도 불구하고 우리 나라에서는 "햄릿"을 새로운 시각으로 표현한 공연의상이나 그에 따른 학문적 연구는 미비한 실정이다.
이에 본 연구에서는 햄릿의 무대의상을 논제로 선택하여 "햄릿" 작품의 새로운 연출을 시도하고자 하였다. "햄릿"이 지니는 다양성을 고전적인 스타일의 복식요소와 색채 및 소재개발을 통하여 미래 지향적인 이미지를 표현 할 수 있는 무대의상을 디자인하였다. 새로운 시각으로 접근한 작품의 연출 의도를 무대의상을 통해 효과적으로 표현함으로써 예술적이고 독창적인 무대의상을 창출하고 현대 무대의상의 표현영역을 확대하는데 목적이 있다.
본 연구의 내용 및 방법은 무대의상의 특성과 역사, 디자인 요소를 문헌을 통해 고찰하고, 팜플렛과 인터넷을 통한 사진 자료들을 수집하여 국내외 공연된 작품들을 분석하였다. 또한 연출가의 작품의도에 따라 다양하게 표현되어온 햄릿 무대의상의 변천 과정을 문헌을 통해 고찰하였다.
이러한 이론적 배경을 토대로 "햄릿"에 대한 새로운 해석을 시도하였고, 복합적인 이미지에 중점을 둔 5점의 작품을 제작하였다.
본 연구의 결론은 다음과 같다.
첫째, 이론적 배경을 고찰 한 결과 "햄릿"의 작품해석은 연출의도에 따라 매우 다양하게 여러 가지 각도로 해석 될 수 있으므로 항상 새로운 모습의 상이한 무대의상으로 창출되어 공연됨을 알 수 있었다.
둘째, 햄릿 작품의 연출의도에 있어서 원작의 시대적인 배경에서 보여지는 고전적 이미지와 현대인의 감성에 부합하는 미래 지향적인 이미지를 복합적으로 표현하고자, 고전적인 실루엣과 현대적인 소재를 무대의상에 도입함으로써 과거와 현대의 시공간적인 조화를 이룰 수 있었다.
셋째, 작품의 색채에 있어서 미래지향적 이미지를 표현 할 수 있는 은색과 보라계열의 차갑고 신비한 색감을 응용함으로써 등장인물의 성격과 심리묘사 및 새로운 연출 의도인 시대적 배경 설정을 상징적으로 표현할 수 있었다.
넷째, 작품에 사용된 소재에 있어서 벨벳, 벨루어, 수직실크 등 중후한 소재와 광택성의 양가죽과 인공피혁 및 쉬폰, 노방 등 다양한 성격의 소재가 지닌 질감의 대비효과는 개성 있는 여러 가지 인물의 성격과 동일 인물의 심한 내적 변화를 표현하기에 적합하였다. 또한 극중에서 현실과 영혼으로 이원화된 세계를 표현할 수 있었다.
다섯째, 올풀기, 패딩, 스모킹, 비딩, 터킹, 테이핑 등의 여러 기법을 사용하여 소재를 개발함으로써 빛에 의한 질감의 부조 적인 음영효과와 풍부한 질감 표현을 효과적으로 확대할 수 있었으며, 독창적인 무대의상디자인을 창출할 수 있었다.
햄릿을 희곡으로서 재조명하는 작업이 활발히 이루어지고 있으므로 그에 호응하여 무대의상을 예술로서 인정하는 작업 또한 활성화되어야 한다고 본다.
무대의상은 극에 대한 내용을 의상으로써 설명하고, 분위기를 이끌어 가는데 주 역할을 담당하여 연극에 있어서 보조품이 아닌 주된 요소의 하나로 자리 매김을 해야 할 것이다.
본 연구를 통하여 다양한 소재를 무대의상에 도입함으로써 독특한 시각적인 효과를 나타낼 수 있었다. 이와 같은 연구를 계기로 새로운 소재개발에 의한 실험적인 무대의상이 계속적으로 연구되기를 바란다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

A play is an art which shows human experience and interacts with spectators. And it is an artistic work for playwriters, directors, stage artists and actors to make a new world on the stage. The costumes give spectators in formations about the character.
The Hamlet, one of the most well-known classic plays, written by Shakespeare, asks spectators questions about the meaning of life and it is interpreted in so many different ways. The language which is used in a play allows spectators to internet the abstract meaning of the play. On the other hand, The character and the situation of the play can be visualized through the costume. However, there is no enough study on the stage costumes depending on the different interpretations of the play in Korea so far.
Therefore, this study tries to suggest different designs of the costumes, taking 'The Hamlet' as the theme For this thesis, costumes which show the various character of the play were made. These costumes are designed to have modern images as well as classical images of 'The Hamlet' using distinct colors and materials. Producing the artistic and unique costumes and opening a new stage of the costumes by approaching in a new way is the aim of this thesis. A lot of documents on the attribute and the history of the stage play and the element of design are studied For this thesis, and the photos are collected from the brochures, pamphlets and web sites. Furthermore, the history of the costumes of 'The Hamlet' which are designed variously by the intentions of the directors is researched.
According to the study of the documents and other materials like web sites, a new interpretation of 'The Hamlet' is made, and 5 costumes which contain various images were made.
The conclusions of this thesis are, First, 'The Hamlet' is interpreted variously by the intentions of the directors. Therefore, the costumes of 'The Hamlet' are designed variously for different stages.
Second, The classic silhouette of the costume with the modern material made a combination of the past and the present as the era of the story and the modern interpretation are combined in the play.
Third, It was possible to express the interpretation of the director and character`s personality, using cold colors, such as silver and purple which express modem images.
Forth, the contrast of the various materials, such as velvet, velure, handmade silk, glossy sheepskin, artificial leather, shiffon and nobang was effective to express the change of the character`s mind and different character`s personality. Furthermore it could show the divided status into the reality and the spirit.
Fifth, as using a new material made by fraying, padding, smoking, beading, tucking and taping, the light reflected on the surface of the materials made unique character of the costumes.
'The Hamlet' is re-interpreted actively nowadays, so the costume of it should be re-designed according to the interpretation and taken as an important part of the stage art not an necessary. Because the costume of the stage play explains the environment of the play and leads the atmosphere of a play.
It was possible to make an unique visual effect of the costume by using various materials through this study. I hope the experimental costume will be studied further using new materials based on this study.
