In this paper, we analyzed the harmonics which effect on the inverse time overcurrent relay. According to the experiment results, the THD (Total Harmonic Distortion) value of the non-sinusoidal current proportionally increase the pick up current and the operation time of the inverse time overcurrent relay. To study the operation of the protective relay, this paper models an actual KEPCO (Korea Electrical Power Corporation) distribution system, CT (Current Transformer), and a protective relay by using EMTP(Electro-Magnetic Transients Program), ATPDraw, and TACS, and analyzed cases with various amounts of harmonic loads.
