세계유산 한국의 서원 제향 전승 구조와 현황－9개 서원 홀기 비교·검토를 중심으로－ = A Study on Sacrificial Rite of Seo-won in the Joseon Dynasty

국문 초록 (Abstract)

한국 서원의 향사는 국학(國學) 즉, 성균관이나 향교에서 봉행하는 석전(釋奠)을 기준으로 삼아 모방하면서도, 그 대상과 규모 그리고 의식절차 등에서는 융쇄(隆殺)의 차등을 견지한다. 서원 관련 활동을 활발하게 전개한 퇴계 이황은 신재 주세붕이 제정한 백운동서원의 향사례에 대폭 수정을 가함으로써 조선시대 서원향사례의 초석을 다지게 된다. 특히 제품의 진설과 의절의 진행과 관련하여 중요한 표준을 제시하였고, 제관의 구분과 수행조건 등에 대해서도 기준을 제공했다. 이후 한국의 서원 향사례는 이러한 퇴계의 작업 결과물을 기준으로 삼아 계승과 비판 그리고 조정의 과정을 거치면서 발전해갔다.
한국의 서원은 자신의 위상을 국학(國學)과 향사(鄕祠)의 중간에 설정하려는 의식을 강하게 보여준다. 특히 서원의 향사례를 정비하는 과정에서 향교의 석전을 참고하면서도 융쇄의 차등을 견지하려고 긴장했다. 이러한 긴장과 고민의 과정을 통해 조선시대 서원들은 한국적 서원 향사례를 조성해나갔다. 현존하는 서원들 중에 유네스코 세계문화유산에 등재된 9개 서원(소수서원·남계서원·옥산서원·도산서원·필암서원·도동서원·병산서원·무성서원·돈암서원)의 향사례를 ‘홀기(笏記)’의 내용을 바탕으로 구체적으로 비교·검토함으로써 한국의 서원향사례가 어떻게 진행되고 전승되었는지 살펴보는 것이 이 논문의 목적이다.
구체적인 항목들의 경우 9개 서원들 간에도 차이가 있고, 이외의 서원들까지 포함한다면 훨씬 다양한 차이들이 존재할 것이다. 하지만 이와 같은 차이가 존재한다는 것 자체가 이미 서원의 향사례를 국가적 차원에서 규정하여 제공했던 것이 아니라 다양한 학문공동체가 자율적으로 고민과 토론의 과정을 통해 정립해 나갔음을 보여준다. 한국의 서원 향사례가 대동(大同)을 유지하면서도 소이(小異) 또한 존속케 했던 것이 이를 대변한다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

Sacrificial rite of Seo-won base on Seok-jeon(釋奠) was held in the government school such as Hyang-gyo and imitate it, but drew a sharp distinction about the subject, the scale and the ritual. Especially, it strongly reflected the sense of authenticity lineage(道統) when select the subject, but it adopted relatively small scale and simple ritual. These characteristics of sacrificial rite of Seo-won outstandingly appeared in the Joseon Dynasty.
Toe-gye Yi-hwang laid the groundwork for sacrificial rite of Seo-won in the Joseon Dynasty by making extensive retouching the sacrificial rite of Baekwoondong-seo-won was established by Sin-jae Joo-seboong. Since then, acrificial Rite of Seo-won in the Joseon Dynasty has developed through inheritance and criticism about this Toe-gye’s work.
Joseon Dynasty Seo-won was under tension and worry to set own stature in the middle of Hyang-gyo(鄕校) which is the government school and Hyang-sa (鄕祠) which is the town shrine. And it could form unique ritual style of sacrificial rite of Joseon Dynasty Seo-won through these tension and worry.
This study is designed in order to identify empirically that sacrificial rite of Seo-won how to development in Joseon Dynasty by comparison the Nine representative Seo-won in Joseon Dynasty: So-su-seo-won(紹修書院), Nam-gye-seo-won(灆溪書院), Ok-san-seo-won(玉山書院), Do-san-seo-won(陶山書院), Pil-Amseo-won(筆巖書院), Do-dong-seo-won(道東書院), Byeong-san-seo-won(屛山書院), Mu-seong-seo-won(武城書院), Don-am-seo-won(遯巖書院).
Specific rituals are difference between the Nine Seo-won, if it includes the other Seo-wons, the difference is more. However the existence of this difference itself shows that various academic communities autonomously established through the process of distress and debate. Sacrificial rite of Seo-won in Joseon Dynasty maintained general similarity, but also maintained negligible differences, it represents diversity of Seo-won culture in in Joseon Dynasty.
