This is an inquiry on the circulation structure and experience methods as one facet of the characteristics of the gardens in mountains of the Joseon Dynasty, in other words, Wollim. For a garden whose elements had been drawn from the preexisting nature, walking was the key medium of experience. Waterways serve as the guideline for these gardens, as a lead. And because they were created in compliance with the lay of the land, one can successively appreciate the natural scenery that is continuously exposed and hidden along the linear garden path. ‘Yoo(遊), a learning process of the beauty of nature in East Asian tradition, is a convenient term for explaining the walking practiced inside the gardens. It can be divided into two parts: ‘Geunyoo', strolling in nearby places within the garden boundaries, and Wonyoo, strolling long distances, among many different gardens. ‘Wonyoo' can be observed in Bogil-do Booyong-dong, where the gardens are sprawled across the island, or Soojung-dong, Moonso-dong, and Gweumswae-dong in Haenam province where a few gardens were created adjacently and enjoyed together. The motion experience inside garden is constituted of a series of walking(movements) and resting(halt). The garden path running alongside the land is in reality a series of space for the viewing in motion (動看) and viewing in repose (靜觀). Through walking accompanied with these two types of viewing, meeting with nature and aesthetic appreciation of garden can be deepen.
