미쉬나 켈림 1, 6-9가 거룩함의 정도를 구분하는 이유 = Degrees of Holiness from the Text of the Mishnah, Kelim 1

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

In contrast to the usual understanding of the concepts of holiness and profanity in dichotomous relationship, the text of Mishnah, Kelim 1, enumerates ten different degrees of holiness, using technical terms as ‘holy of holies’ and ‘less holy’ things. This essay aims to show how the degrees of holiness are reflected in the text of the Mishna by analyzing the usage of these technical terms, holy of holies and less holy things, first from the texts of the Hebrew Bible and then from the Mishnah. The historical background and the social function of the concept of graded holiness are also the subjects of the inquiry.
It turns out that the Hebrew Bible does show certain distinctions among the places and sacrificial offerings in relation to the temple, but its usage of the terms was not systematically or consistently established, and employs them in various contexts for various purposes.
The Mishnah, on the other hand, tries to analyze the biblical texts, to systemize them, and to apply the result on real or imaginary situationsthat are not clearly defined by the biblical rules. The technical terms were invented and employed during this process of systemization, and this reveals the intention of the editors of the Mishnah to provide a realistic picture of an ideal religious community centered on the ritual services of the temple. Considering the historical situation of the time of the Mishnah’s formation, this ideal picture must have worked as a source of hope for the Jewish community in the middle of ongoing foreign rules.

국문 초록 (Abstract)

일반적으로 '거룩함'과 '속됨'은 이분법적으로 나누어 나누어 이해하기 쉬운데, 미쉬나, 켈림 제 1장 본문은 '지극히 거룩한 것' 그리고 '덜 거룩한 것'과 같은 용어를 사용하며 서로 다른 '거룩함의 정도'를 언급하고 있다. 본 논문은 히브리 성서와 미쉬나 본문에 나오는 이런 전문 용어의 용례를 분석하고, 이런 용어들이 필요했던 역사적 배경과 '거룩함의 정도'라는 개념이 가진 사회적 기능이 무엇이었는지 묻는다. 연구 결과 히브리 성서는 장소나 제기와 관련해서는 이런 전문 용어를 체계적으로 일관성 있게 사용하지 않는 것으로 나타났고, 제물과 관련해서는 특정한 용례로 사용하고 있었다. 미쉬나 본문은 히브리 성서의 용례를 깊이 분석하여 체계화하려는 노력을 보여주며,그 결과를 성서 본문이 정확하게 규정하지 않은 실제적인 혹은 상상의 상황에 적용하려고 하고 있다. 이런 체계화 과정 속에서 새로운 전문 용어를 고안해서 사용했다. 미쉬나 본문은 이런 노력을 통해 성전 제의를 중심으로 형성된 이상적인 종교 공동체의 모습을 실제적으로 그려 보여주려고 노력하고 있다. 미쉬나 형성시기를 고려하면 이런 그림은 외국 정부 밑에서 살고 있던 유대 공동체에게 희망을 심어주는 노력이라고 해석할 수 있다.
