1963년 전주종합경기장의 건설과 그 의미 = The Construction and Meaning of Jeonju Stadium in 1963

국문 초록 (Abstract)

전주종합경기장은 1963년 제44회 전국체육대회를 준비하기 위해 설치되었다. 1962년 11월 20일 추진위원회가 구성되어 종합경기장 설치를 계획하고 건립을 추진하여, 다음 해인 1963년 3월에 착공, 같은 해 9월 25일에 완공하였다. 전주종합경기장은 전북도가 1980년과 제61회와 1991년 제72회 그리고 2003년 84회 전국체육대회를 개최하면서 지속적으로 보수되고 재사용되었다.
이 경기장은 1963년에 시민의 성금으로 신축된 데 이어 1980년에 증축될 때도 절반 이상을 시민 성금으로 충당한 지역민의 열망과 힘이 응축된 공간으로, 현대 전주의 발전과 그 궤를 같이 하고 있는 곳이다. 특히 1963년의 제44회 전국체육대회는 전주를 중심으로 전라북도라는 지역이 다른 지역으로부터 그동안 받은 차별의식에서 벗어날 수 있게 된 계기가 되었다는 점에서 그 의미가 작지 않다. 그리고 그 중심에는 전주종합경기장이 있었다. 특히 전주종합경기장은 차별을 극복하기 위해 전주와 전북도민들이 건설비를 마련하는 등 그 열망이 응축되어 있는 공간이라는 점에서 그 의미가 깊고 전북도민들의 열망을 표현한 건축물이라는 점에서 그 가치가 매우 크다고 할 수 있다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

Jeonju Stadium was established in 1963 to prepare for the 44th National Sports Festival. Jeonju Stadium was continuously renovated and reused as Jeonbuk(Jeollabuk-do) held the 61st, 72nd, and 84th national sports competitions in 1980, 1991, respectively. This stadium was built in 1963 with donations from citizens, and when it was expanded in 1980, it is a space where the aspirations and power of local residents who have filled more than half of it with civic donations are condensed. In other words, it is in line with the development of modern Jeonju. In particular, it can be seen that the 44th National Sports competition in 1963 was an opportunity for the Jeollabuk-do region, centered on Jeonju, to escape the sense of discrimination received from other regions. And in the center was Jeonju Stadium. In particular, Jeonju Stadium is meaningful in that it is a space where Jeonju and Jeonbuk residents are paying for construction to overcome discrimination, and it is very valuable in that it is a building that expresses the aspirations of Jeonbuk residents.
