충청도 사혼제 속의 연행 인형 연구

국문 초록 (Abstract)

본 연구는 ‘연행 인형’이라는 개념을 사용하여 충청도 사혼제 속에 등장하는 허수아비에 주목한다. 생명이 없는 짚으로 만들어진 허수아비가 어떠한 과정을 거치며 무엇인가를 의미하는 생명이 있는 존재, 곧 연행 인형으로 전환되는 과정을 살핀다. 이러한 고찰의 과정은 곧 충청도 사혼제 속의 허수아비들의 연행 인형화 과정을 기술하는 것이다. 허수아비의 조형 과정과 외양에서 연행 방식 그리고 의미화에 이르는 과정을 기술하는 것이다. 덧붙여 이러한 연행 인형화 과정에서 나타나는 여러 특징들의 나타나는 이유에 대해서도 함께 추론해 보았다.
논의의 결과, 충청도 사혼제 속 허수아비들은 그 조형 과정과 외양에서 짚과 헝겊 등 내구성이 약한 재료로 금기와 제약을 거친 제작자가 짧고 단순한 제작 공정을 거쳐 평면적이고 소박한 연행 인형을 일회적으로 제작한다는 특징을 드러낸다. 연행방식의 경우, 그 발화 연행에서 ‘보이는 연행자 발화의 대상’으로 나타나고 있으며, 움직임 연행에서는 ‘보이는 연행자의 공공연한 조종’이라는 특징을 보인다. 이러한 연행 방식은 ‘드러내는 연행 방식’이라는 공통점을 가진다. 의미화 과정의 경우 ‘축성이라는 의례를 거쳐서 초자연적인 존재인 미혼인 채로 죽은 영혼으로 영속적 변환’이라는 양상을 보인다.
충청도 사혼제 속 허수아비들의 연행 인형화 과정에서 나타나는 이러한 특징들은 종교ㆍ주술적 문화 전통이라는 문화적 기반에서 기인하는 것이다. 즉, 충청도 사혼제의 연행 공동체는 질병이나 재앙의 퇴치 또는 정신적 안정을 보장받기 위해 초월적 존재를 대상으로 제의를 준비한다. 이를 위해 그 대상이 될 연행 인형을 제작한다. 굿이라는 제의 문맥 속에서 초자연적인 존재 인 미혼인 채로 죽은 영혼을 의미하는 연행 인형을 제작한다. 초자연적 존재를 인형과 동일시하고 있다는 점에서 주술적이다. 주술적 의미 작용이 이루어지고 있는 것이다. 여기서 강조되며 중요시되는것은 재미나 흥미 또는 신기함보다는 주술적 효용이나 효과이다. 따라서 연행 인형의 외양이나 연행 방식에 강조점이 두어지지 않는다. 그 결과 나온 특징적 양상이 단순하고 소박한 외양과 드러내는 연행 방식이다. 충청도 사혼제 속 연행 인형의 외양적 특징은 공유된 종교 주술적 믿음 체계 속에서 관념적 존재를 환기시키는 데에 그 강조점이 두어진 주술적 조형임을 드러낸다. 드러내는 연행 방식 역시 종교 주술적 믿음이 중요하고 의례적 행위가 요구되는 주술적 연행 방식임을 드러낸다. 의미화 양상 역시 연행 인형과 초자연적 존재를 동일시하여 연행 인형을 영속적으로 전환시키는 주술적 의미 작용의 양상을 드러내고 있다.
본 연구에서 이루어진 논의는 그 동안 인형극에만 한정된 우리의 인형 연행 연구의 편향성을 교정하는 계기가 된다. 오락ㆍ예술적인 인형극과는 다른 양상을 보이는 주술ㆍ종교적 인형 연행의 양상을 살피게 되어 우리의 인형 연행의 또 다른 측면을 구체적으로 확인하게 된 것이다. 나아가 이 연구는 인형극이라는 한정된 연구에서 인형 연행이라는 보다 개방적이고 너른 연구 영역으로 나아가는 시발점이 될 것이라 믿는다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

This study intends to examine the Heo-su-a-bi(scarecrow: 허수아비) in Chungcheong-do SaHonJe(Soul marrage ritual: 사혼제). For this, I will use the concept, 'puppet performing object' which means the material images of humans, animals, or spirits that are created, displayed, or manipulated in narrative or dramatic performance.
In chapter Ⅱ, I examine the process of moulding puppet performing object and aspects of their appearances. The process of moulding puppet performing object are simple manufacturing process by shamans who are confined by taboo. The appearances of puppet performing object are figure of the whole body in full dress with a humble and flat face. In conclusion, the process of moulding puppet performing object and aspects of their appearances are the process of completing non-individual appearance with natural markers(biological, and material traits) through the simple manufacturing process by the producer who is restrained with taboo.
To make puppet performing object animated, the performance by a human performer is needed. Chapter Ⅲ deals with the acts of a human performer. The performance of a human performer is mainly presented in a way of utterance performance and movement performance. Utterance performance is 'object of a visible performer's utterance'. In this utterance performance, there is no utterance of puppet, which only exists as the object of performer's utterance. Movement performance is 'overt operation by a visible performer'. These performance methods of puppet performing object are common to revealing in performance process.
In chapter Ⅳ, I look into the signification of puppet performing object as the whole including the appearance, utterance, and movement. The signification of puppet performing object is the puppet performing object which shows 'transformation(perpetual transformation)' as supernatural existence(the sprit of youth put to death as an unmarried). After passing through some ritual process, the puppet performing object begin to speak and move and are regarded as a living thing by a performer, and then they are transferred into supernatural existence.
In chapterⅤ, I examine the puppet performing object and cultural grounds. The puppet performing object of SaHonJe features result from the cultural grounds. The cultural grounds according to each features are summarized as follows. The features in the manufacturing process of puppet performing object are the product of cultural grounds as 'incantatory or religious orientation' which evokes an ideational existence in belief system. In performance process of , the revealing performance is related with the incantatory performance demanding the ritual ceremony and religious belief. In signification of puppet performing object is described as the incantatory signification of ritual performance producing the perpetual transformation into supernatural existence.
