The purpose of this study is to draw out an educational implication based on clarifying the concept of Plato’s ‘imitation’. The meaning of imitation in Plato’s sense is ambiguous, for imitation in Book Ⅲ of Republic is described as the core principle of education, while in Book Ⅹ, it is blamed for not meeting the principle of reason. The apparent contradiction is resolved when we attend to the ‘objects’ of imitation. The objects of imitation which Plato criticize is those of sense and opinion. On the other hand, the objects of imitation as the core principle of education are ideal realities such as wisdom and self-control, which are not apprehended by sense and opinion. Therefore, the concept of imitation implies mystery which does not depend on knowledge and technique concerning the works of art. According to Collinson, “aesthetic commentating” is to be interpreted as knowledge and technique, while “aesthetic involvement” refers to the mystery implied in imitation. Aesthetic involvement is, according to Collinson, to follow through the way the artist went in order to reach his visions. According to Collingwood, the mystery is not to be considered as mere irrationality but “intimation of reality”, that is, invocation of supreme value accompanying a feeling that we are in the presence of a mystery. Plato’s imitation is not a facsimile or replica, that is, an object of the same order and possessing the same characteristics as the original, but an object of a wholly different order. Plato’s theory of degrees of reality shows that the image created by an artist is an indirect symbol of reality, which is of supreme value. The appreciator, as a recipient of the image, acquires a feeling that we are in the presence of a mystery revealed and yet not revealed. Plato blamed the imitation for copying the objects of sense and opinion, while he advocated the imitation as the intimation of reality.
