Immersion programs have gained popularity in Korea since the early 2000s due to its effect on enhancing the communication skill of English learners. This trend corresponds with the trend of English as a world language. However, few studies have specifically investigated the nature of English learning and teaching experiences of the elementary school students in immersion programs in Korea. This study aims to help provide a more detailed picture of the significance of teaching strategies and patterns of interaction between teacher and students in an English immersion classroom using a qualitative case study. First, it investigates teaching strategies that an immersion teacher uses in an English immersion classroom. Second, it further investigates the patterns of interaction between teacher and students. Lastly, it reveals an immerion teacher’s perception about immersion programs. The study fundamentally draws from the input, interaction, and output models in second language acquisition research.
The data for this study were collected in a private English institution for three months through audio recording of classroom interactions, interview with the teacher, and field notes during observations. The teaching strategies were analyzed comparing Wang’s (2008) study. The patterns of interaction were examined using grounded theory approach.
In the study, the immersion teacher used various teaching strategies such as body language, language modification, contextual clues, connection to students’ lives, comprehension check, and turn-taking control to facillitate students’ comprehension of content. The interaction in the classroom occurred through the teacher’s questioning to share experience and feeling, to check comprehension, and to elicit prior knowledge of content. The interaction also took place through error correction as scaffolding, longer wait-time, and students’ teasing each other in the classroom.
Based on the findings, it is hoped that this study will be helpful for the CBI or immersion teachers who are looking for new approaches to teach their students more effectively.
