영문 한국사 개설서의 고대사 서술 동향 - 2000년대 출간된 개설서와 비교역사학적 접근의 문제를 중심으로-

국문 초록 (Abstract)

본 논문은 2000년대 이후 출간된 영미권 한국사 개설서의 현황을 검토하고, 이 중 한국고대사의 서술에서 나타나는 특징을 살펴보았다. 이를 위해 Michael Seth의 A Concise History of Korea를 최근 영미권 한국사 개설서의 예시이자 국내 학계와의 한국고대사 서술 방식과의 차이를 보여주는 사례로 활용하였다. 해당 개설서의 저자는 한국고대사에 관한 장절에서 중국 문명과의 교류를 강조하는 동시에, 세계사 속에서 고대 한국 정치집단의 위치를 논의하는 특징을 보인다. 그러나 저자의 서술은 경우에 따라서는 한국고대사에 대한 국내 학계와의 시각 차이가 극명하게 나타나기도 하는데, 이는 저자만이 아니라 서구 학계에서 자주 취신하는 비교역사학(comparative history)적 접근의 결과로 여겨진다. 곧 본고에서는 국내 학계에서 영미권 개설서에 대해 비판하는 요소인 한사군 중심 서술이나 중국사에 종속된 서술은 이러한 방법론과 밀접하게 연관이 있는 것으로 해석하였다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

This paper reviews the current status of Korean history textbooks written in English published since the 2000s, and examines the characteristics that appear in the narrations of Korean ancient history. For this, it used Michael Seth’s A Concise History of Korea as an example of the recent textbooks to Korean history in the English-American countries to indicate the different narrative method from the Korean academia’s. The author’s method has a characteristic that emphasizes the cultural exchange with Chinese civilizations and the position of ancient Korean polities in the world history in chapters on ancient Korean history. Sometimes, the author’s opinions signifies clear differences in viewpoints on ancient Korean history from the Korean academia. These differences were the result of the comparative historical approach, which had been constantly adopted by the historians in English-speaking countries. This paper concluded that the narratives characteristics of the Korean history textbooks written in English such as focusing on the Chinese Han Commanderies or Sino-centric historical viewpoint, that the Korean academia often criticize, were closely related to this methodology.
