This paper examines how Herman Melville in Billy Budd delves into the interlocking questions of violence of exception, recollection of sympathy, and ethics of salvation. In the novella, Melville’s depiction of the titular character’s exceptional tragedy—impressed into service and doomed to be executed despite his innocence—reveals the violence of law that victimizes him and the violence of traumatization caused by such victimization. In addition, Melville attends to how Billy’s shipmates recall his execution so as to question the ethics of salvation which results from their sympathetic recollection of his death. Melville thus narrativizes Billy’s tragic story as a profound critical reflection on the general myths of literature, sympathy, and salvation.
