This study explores the Gan-Dok characters which were widely used in the private community from the Spring and Autumn and Warring States Periods to the Han dynasty, to find its relationship with Ye-Beon, which played the most important role in forming the type of Chinese characters used today.
To do so, I first studied the original excavation and characteristics of the Gan-Dok characters and of the excavated and reported Gan-Dok characters of each period of the Spring and Autumn and Warring States Periods, the Qin, and the Han dynasties, I selected those of high academic value in terms of quantity · contents · characters's trace and so on, to analyze the characteristics of the calligraphic style.
I investigated the process of changes involved in development according to the period of the characters and organized the characteristics and changes of the calligraphic style of each period.
As a result, I found out why Ye-Beon was necessary and the regulations of Ye-Beon to study the relationship between Gan-Dok and Ye-Beon. I also knew that, through the calligraphic style of the Gan-Dok characters from the Spring and Autumn and Warring States Periods to the Qin and Han dynasties, not only was lishu(隸書) and zhangcao(章草) formed and completed, but even xingshu(行書) and kaishu(楷書) sprouted from this.
As this signifies that zhuanshu(篆書) of ancient character system goes through the process of change into guli(古隸) and gives birth to the modern character system of lishu, this process is in fact called Ye-Beon. This Ye-Beon took place inevitably due to may complex factors and has many rules.
As time passed, regulated calligraphy was combined with the human instinct of aesthetic pursuit to give birth to bafen(八分). Also, the character form of Chinese characters changed from oval through flat to square form.
Ye-Beon, which was so important, took place over six hundred years from the Spring and Autumn and Warring States Periods to the Han dynasty. There is no doubt that Gan-Dok characters were what made Ye-Beon possible over such a long period of time. This is what this study wished to uncover.
