This study focuses on Chungin and Seoeol, who were called 'Chung-seo‘ in the hierarchical structure of the Joseon Dynasty. Chungin and Seoeol, who belonged to the Middle class(中人層) in the four-hierarchy system, were called by the same name 'Chung-seo,’ even if they had separate identities. Consequently, previous studies failed to properly investigate the way Chungin and Seoeol recognized one another and the internal tension between the two groups. With such consideration, this study analyzed the cases on the appearance and changes of the term 'Chung-seo' and the recognition on Seoeol by Chungin that was found in the process of Chungin Tongchung Movement(中人通淸運動) in the 19th century.
'Chung-seo', a term collectively referring to Chungin and Seoeol, appears in governmental and private compilation materials in the Joseon Dynasty. In the 17th century, where the concept of Chung-seo first appeared, reinforcement of military force and maintenance of military service system was in urgent need due to war. In such situation, 'Yangyeok byeontong(良役變通)' was under discussion, creating the term 'Chung-seo' by including Chungin and Seoeol in the same category in terms of policy. Viz, Chung-seo was a term that appeared as a part of national governance, not as a concept of social status.
However, in records by the end of the 18th century, the meaning of Chungin and Seoeol seems to separate in discussion of Chung-seo. Such phenomena was not sudden, but was a result that apperared gradually from the past. Chung-seo had often been discussed as the subject of 'Yangyeok(良役),' and this matter was concluded by the enactment and enforcement of the 'Gyunyeokbeop(均役法)' in the 26th year of King Yeongjo(1750). In terms of government post, Seoeol began to succeed, changing the range of government posts that Chungin and Seoeol could take. As such, the meaning of the term Chung-seo began to change gradually from the mid-18th century. Ultimately, the term Chung-seo disappeared from record after the 19th century.
In the 19th century, the tension within Chung-seo appears on the surface. Chungin Tongchung Movement in 1851 shows this tension well from the side of Chungin. 『Sangwon-kwabang(象院科榜)』 is the only data which explains the process of Chungin Tongchung Movement and directly presents the voice of Chungin. The analysis of 『Sangwon-kwabang』 confirms that, in the process of the Tongchung Movement, Chungin have been recognizing Seoeol as different groups from themselves.
The recognition of Chungin on Seoeol is threefold. First is Seoeol as a subject of comparison in terms of goal of the Tongchung. The subject of comparison by Chungin were Seoeol, not Yangban, and they did not necessarily seek to become Yangban. Next is Seoeol as a subject of comparison in terms of social status. Chungin had a need to prove that they have equivalent or better status than Seo-ol if they wanted to succeed in the public offices where Seoeol were allowed to hold. Last is Seoeol as a subject of imitation. Chungin imitated Seoeol, as can be seen in their attempts to deliver their appeals in the very similar method of the unique appealing method of Seoeol. This demonstrates the inferiority of Chungin, whose status were below that of Seoeol in reality.
