수학에서의 자유의 한계

국문 초록 (Abstract)

카르납은 『언어의 논리적 구문』에서 구문론적인 체계로서 언어를 선택함에서 아무 제한도 있을 수 없다는 취지의 이른바 “관용의 원리”를 제시한 바 있다. 이에 대해 괴델은 구문론적 규칙들이 일관적임이 사전에 증명되어야 한다는 제한 조건을 충족시켜야 하나 그러한 조건은 그의 제 2 불완전성 정리에 의해 충족될 수 없다는 비판을 제시한 바 있다. 그러나 골드파브와 전영삼은 일관성의 증명은커녕 일관성의 조건마저도 반드시 충족시켜야 하는 것은 아니라고 주장했다. 이 글에서는 구문론을 규칙을 통해 논리-수학적 용어의 의미를 묵시적으로 정의하려는 카르납의 의도에 비추어 언어적 틀을 선택함에 있어 최소한 일관성의 조건을 충족시킬 필요가 있으며 비일관적임이 이미 입증된 체계를 유지하는 것은 관용의 원리에 의해서도 더욱이 허용되지 않는다는 것을 논증하고 있다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

In his Logical Syntax of Language Carnap proposed “the Principle of Tolerance” to the effect that there is no limit of our freedom to choose a language as a syntactical system. G?del criticized that whereas the rules of syntax should satisfy the requirement that it should be demonstrated beforehand that they are consistent, it cannot be met in view of his Second Incompleteness Theorem. However, some philosophers including W. Goldfarb and Yongsam Chon(전영삼) retorted in defending Carnap that the freedom allowed by the Principle of Tolerance is wide enough to permit inconsistency. It is argued that in view of Carnap’s intention to define implicitly the logico-mathematical terms by adopting the suitable rules of syntax, the requirement that the syntactical rules should be consistent is a minimum limit to our freedom in mathematics and it is not permitted by the Principle to maintain the rules of syntax which were already proved to be inconsistent.
