사회과학자들을 위한 다층모형의 이론과 실제

국문 초록 (Abstract)

연구자들이 마주하는 자연현상과 사회현상, 인간행동을 반영하는 변수의 특성과 자료의 구조는 무한대로 다양하다. 그러나 통계모형이 반영하는 변수의 특성과 자료의 구조는 사실상 매우 제한적이다. 따라서 현존하는 통계모형들은 제한된 범위에서 실제 자료를 적절히 분석할 뿐이다. 다층자료의 위계적 속성은 전통적인 통계모형에 부합하지 않는 자료구조이며, 다층자료를 적절히 분석하는 통계모형의 개발을 위하여 많은 연구자들이 오랫동안 연구를 진행하였다. 오늘날 다층모형은 보편적인 통계모형으로서 연구자들에게 인지되고 있으며, 실제 현상에서 관찰되는 다양한 위계적 속성의 자료들에 부합하는 통계모형들도 계속 개발되고 있다.
이 책에서는 2-수준 다층모형과 3-수준 다층모형을 다루었다. 두 모형은 다층모형의 표준모형이라고 할 수 있다. 이 책은 전체 8장으로 구성되어 있다. 1장, 2장, 3장은 다층모형의 학술사적인 배경과, 방법론적 특성, 그리고 현재까지 다층모형의 발전을 서술한 장들이다. 연구자들이 실제 연구에서 응용하는 통계모형으로서 다층모형은 이후의 장들에서 소개하였다. 4장은 2-수준 다층모형이 횡단연구에서 어떻게 활용될 수 있는지 서술한 장이다. 가장 핵심적이며, 이후의 모형을 이해하는데도 기초 소양이 되는 장이라고 할 수 있다. 5장에서는 2-수준 다층모형이 종단연구에서 어떻게 명세화되는지 소개하였다. 종단연구가 강조되는 학계의 동향을 비추어 보면, 5장은 매우 중요한 내용을 다루는 셈이다. 6장은 연구자의 창의적 모형명세화로 다층모형의 응용과 적용범위가 구체적으로 어떻게 확산될 수 있는지 가능성을 보여준 부분이다. 또한 잔차분석이 제공하는 정보도 함께 소개하였다. 7장에서 3-수준 다층모형을 소개하였다. 3-수준 다층모형은 많은 경우에 2-수준 다층모형보다 방법론적으로 더 타당한 모형이다. 8장은 다층모형의 방법론적 이해를 돕기 위한 것으로, 모형의 수학적 정의와 추정이론, 그리고 구체적인 추정방법을 다루었다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

Researchers working in the academics attempt to account for the phenomena of natural, social, and human behaviors in which there exist many types of data and variables. The statistical models, however, only account for limited areas of the phenomena. Multilevel data was the one that the traditional statistical models couldn’t appropriately account for its hierarchical structure of the data, especially when there were covariates at each of the levels given the multilevel structure.
This book presents 2-level and 3-level multilevel models in a comprehensive way. The two multilevel models can be considered as the standard multilevel models that can serve as the ground for understanding more complicated multilevel models such as cross-classified and generalized multilevel models.
This book consists of eight chapters. The first three chapters covers the history of the multilevel model development, their methodological contribution in the fields along with special characteristics of the models. Chapter 4 is the fundamental part for the researchers since it presents the strategy of 2-level multilevel modeling in the context of cross-sectional data analysis which would be most popular context for research practices.
