The aim of this paper is to explore the function and meaning of Immanuel prophecy in Isaiah 7:14. There have been various interpretations of the Immanuel prophecy. Christological view, the family line of King Ahaz, Isaiah's wife and his son, metaphorical interpretation, etc. These interpretations are largely classified into attempts to relate Immanuel's prophecy to the coming of the future Messiah and to understand it in the historical context of Isaiah's time. Analyzing Isaiah 7:14 with a textlinguistic methodology, this passage vaguely introduces the detailed function and identity of Immanuel. However, what is clear is that the Immanuel sign in this verse was given in the historical context and serves as a frame to introduce the theme that will be further developed in the following text. In Isaiah 8, Immanuel functions as a sign and is primarily fulfilled in Maher-shalal-hash-bath. The meaning of Immanuel shows the dual nature of God's salvation and judgment. The Immanuel prophecy prospects its ultimate fulfillment in the birth of the messianic baby in Isaiah 9:6, 7. This baby is a divine being and the ultimate Immanuel that proves God is with us. Isaiah 11 further develops the Messianic character of the Immanuel theme. The appearance of the Messianic king is further expanded and introduced through the terms such as Jesse's stalk, a shoot, its root, a branch, and the root of Jesse. Immanuel prophecy is embodied in the humble appearance of the Messiah in Isaiah 11, showing the climax of Immanuel prophecy.

국문 초록 (Abstract)

본 논문은 이사야 7:14의 임마누엘 예언의 기능과 의미를 살펴보는 것이다. 그 동안 임마누엘 예언에 대한 다양한 해석들이 있어왔다. 기독론적 해석, 아하스 왕의 가계와 관련된 해석, 이사야의 아내와 그의 아들 해석, 비유적 해석 등이다. 이 해석들은 크게 임마누엘 예언을 미래의 메시야 오심과 관련시키거나 아니면 이사야 당대의 역사적 정황 속에서 이해하려는 시도들로 구분된다. 텍스트언어학에서 말하는 본문의 결속성과 일관성을 바탕으로 임마누엘을 분석하면 이사야 7:14은 임마누엘의 상세한 기능, 정체성에 대해서 모호하게 소개한다. 하지만 분명한 것은 이 구절의 임마누엘 징조가 당시 역사적 정황 속에서 주어졌고 앞으로 본문 안에서 전개될 주제를 소개하는 프레임 기능을 한다는 점이다. 이사야 8장에서 임마누엘은 징조로서 기능하고 일차적으로 마헬살랄하스바스에서 성취되었다. 임마누엘의 의미는 하나님의 구원과 심판의 양면적 성격을 보여준다. 임마누엘 예언은 이사야 9:6, 7의 메시야적 아기의 탄생에서 궁극적으로 성취를 보게 된다. 이 아기는 신적인 존재이며 하나님께서 우리와 함께 계심을 입증해 주는 궁극적 임마누엘이다. 이사야 11장은 임마누엘 주제의 메시야적 성격을 더욱 발전시킨다. 메시야적 왕의 출현이 이새의 줄기, 한 싹, 그 뿌리, 한 가지, 이새의 뿌리란 용어를 통해 더욱 확장되어 소개된다. 임마누엘 예언이 겸손하게 출현하는 메시야의 성품으로 구체화되어 임마누엘 예언의 절정을 보여준다.
