This paper considered the 『Bonghaecheop(蓬海帖)』, a travel essays of the Gwandong by Seo Gan-bal(徐幹發), who was a scholar in Yeongnam of the late Joseon Dynasty, by dividing it into a section of preface, a section of travel and a section of postface, and its approximate characteristics were examined.
Seo Gan-bal was a person who practiced his studies by living the life of Cheosa(處士) throughout his life based on the teaching of his grandfather’s younger brother Seo Chang-jae(徐昌載) and his teacher Jeong Jong-ro(鄭宗魯) who were disciples of Lee Sang-jeong(李象靖). And Seo Gan-bal worked hard to foster younger generation in the regional community based on Sosu Seowon Confucian Academy. As for the posthumous work of Seo Gan-bal, 14 volumes and 7 books of 『Namae Yugo(南厓遺稿)』 remained as manuscripts, and 『Bonghaecheop』 is the second book among them.
『Bonghaecheop』 has an important material value that informs the geography, customs, and life of Gangwon-do region as well as the introduction of the scenic spots of Gangwon-do region and Mt. Geumgang. Seo Gan-bal introduced the geography and customs of Mt. Geumgang and various regions of Gwandong from a traveler’s point of view in a variety of ways. Although it was based on a positive perception about Gangwon-do’s beautiful landscape and pure customs, from the standpoint of the Yeongnam scholar, it was confirmed that the view to judge Gangwon-do’s culture thoroughly through the standard of Confucian civilization was clear.
As characteristics of a section of travel in the 『Bonghaecheop』, it was mentioned that it recorded the entire travel in great detail, including the schedule, route, and scenery of the travel destination, that it explained the origin and ancient event of the historic site in detail, that the proportion of poetry that recites an inspiration in the travel destination was high, and that it expressed difficulties in strange land such as the hardships of travel and nostalgia without filtration.
In addition, through more than 10 postfaces appended to the 『Bonghaecheop』, the value of 『Bonghaecheop』 was organized and the meaning of the travel in Gwandong they had thought was considered. For the writers of Yeongnam, the Gangwon-do and Mt. Geumgang were recognized as a paradise on earth boasting wonderful natural scenery and as a space for unworldliness where the Taoist immortals would stroll, but they did not hesitate to express negative perceptions about the Buddhist colors of Mt. Geumgang. Also, while fully acknowledging the scarcity of the Gwandong travel, rather than merely finding the pleasure of travel, it was only when the traveler who is the subject of the travel produced more advanced results in life such as the development of learning and the completion of personality through the travel that they thought it had the worth of travel.
