A PEMFC is constituted by a membrane able to conduct protons disposed between two electrodes. The electrodes-membrane assembly, in turn, is pressed by two conductive plates containing some channels in which the reactants flow. A simplified representation of the cell is reported figure 1. The main elements composing the cell are: conductor plates, electrodes and membrane. The electrodes are constituted by a gas diffusion layer and catalysts layer; both have a porous, partially hydrophobic, structure. The PEMFC behavior is quite complex and is influenced by several factors, including composition and structure of electrodes and membrane type. Fluent does not have a tool which can solve complexly electrochemical reactions. So It has not simulated PEMFC behavior with only itself. The gPROMS already used widely throughout the process industries, is ideally suited for providing a common environment for supporting the PEMFC development process, from materials analysis to optimization of operating conditions.
