This study is an effort to interpret the Confucian celebrate classics <the Great Learning(Ta-hsueh)> and <the Doctrine of the Mean(Chung-yung)> in terms of contemporary educational philosophy. These two books had been a long tradition in Korean education and politics, before the Western educational system and thoughts settled down. However, it has been now almost lost. So this study makes efforts to find out the new meanings and ideas, working out the main terms of these two classics, namely, 'making the clear virtue clear(明明德), loving the people(親民), abiding in the highest good(至於至善), `hsing(性), chung(中), `yung(庸)', 'ch'eng(誠) etc.
This will be done in three levels, namely, 1. to expose the possible basis of education, 2. to find out the methods and the ways of education, 3. to recognize the aims and ideas of education. Through this study, we can see, 1. how our education should be founded on our original goodness of nature, 2. how our intellectual learning and moral practice should be correlated in our education, and 3. which aims of education can cultivate the human being into the highest condition of being, namely, the condition of the sage (聖人).
