창극의 서양음악 수용 양상과 그 의미 = A Study on the Acceptance of Western Music of Ch'angguk and Its Meaning

국문 초록 (Abstract)

이 글은 창극이 서양음악 양식을 받아들이고 기존의 판소리 음악과 서양 음악을 혼합시킴으로써, 창극의 음악양식을 변화시켜 간 양상을 추적하고 그 의미를 고찰해보았다. 창극은 판소리에 뿌리를 두고 있으나 원래 대중극으로 출발했기 때문에, 음악의 측면에서도 화려하고 풍부한 표현을 발전시켜 나갔다. 노래의 반주는 북반주에서 수성반주로, 화성적인 대규모 국악관현악으로, 국악과 양악을 혼합하고 다양한 악기를 활용하는 퓨전 밴드로 확장되었다. 노래 양식은 판소리 창법을 기준으로 하되 다양해진 반주 음악과 더불어 양악의 리듬, 화성, 음계 등 여러 양식을 받아들였다. 이러한 변화는 특히 2000년대에 들어서 활발해졌으며, 이 시기의 창작자들이 오페라나 뮤지컬 같은 서구의 타음악극을 의식한 흔적이 뚜렷하다.
그러나 현대 창작 국악에서 국악과 양악을 혼합하는 것이 국악의 현대화인가에 대한 문제가 끊임없이 제기되는 것처럼, 창극에서도 국악과 양악의 혼합은 긍정적 반응과 부정적 반응을 모두 불러 일으켰다. 양악의 이디엄과 악기가 창극을 풍부하게 만든다는 의견과 창극의 전통미를 훼손한다는 의견이 엇갈렸다. 더구나 창극은 드라마와 음악이 무대 위에서 하나로 통일되어야 하는 음악극임에도 불구하고, 서로 다른 음악의 양식적 차이에서 비롯된 틈을 메워줄 해결책을 아직 찾지 못하였다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

This thesis traces the altered phases of ch'angguk's 唱劇 musical style and considers its meaning through accepting Western musical style and blending existing p'ansori 판소리 music and Western music. Because ch'angguk was rooted in p'ansori but originally started as popular theatre, it had developed splendor and enriched expression in musical aspects.
The accompaniment of songs is extended from drum to susong accompaniment, to harmonic extensive kugak (Korean traditional music) orchestration, and to a fusion band which blends kugak and Western music and use various instruments. The mode of song is based on p'ansorii's singing methode but accepted diversifying musical accompaniment and several styles of Western music such as the rhythm, harmony and scale. These changes became active from the 2000's.
It is very clear that creators from this time were aware of Western's musical play like a opera or a musical. However, as the problem that blending kugak and Western music is a modernization of kugak in new formation of kugak has been constantly brought up, the blend of kugak and Western music in ch'angguk causes both positive and negative responses. One claims that idioms and instruments of Western music enrich ch'angguk, and the other insists that these damage ch'angguk's traditional beauty. Moreover, since ch'angguk is the musical play which the drama and music should be unified on the stage, the solution filled up the gap of differences from musical styles has not been found yet.
