셜리 잭슨의 픽션과 여성 고딕 문학의 전통--단편 소설에 나타난 집과 여성의 관계를 중심으로

국문 초록 (Abstract)

본 연구는 단편소설집『로터리: 제임스 해리스의 모험』(The Lottery: The Adventures of James Harris), 『나와 함께 갑시다』(Come Along with Me), 『그저 평범한 날』(Just an Ordinary Day) 과 잭슨의 첫 소설인 『벽을 통한 길』(The Road through the Wall)을 중심으로 셜리 잭슨의 픽션에 나타난 집과 여성의 관계를 20세기 미국사회라는 맥락 안에서 고찰하여 당시 사회의 여성이 공유한 불안과 공포를 진단하고, 잭슨이 여성 고딕 문학의 전통을 어떻게 재해석하고 있는지를 밝히며 잭슨이 미국 문학사내에서 차지하는 위치를 재정립하고 있다. 잭슨의 픽션에서 나타나는 집과 여성의 관계는 지금까지 여성 고딕 문학 연구의 주요 패러다임이 되어온 "집=어머니=여성성"이라는 정신분석학적 포뮬라가 아닌 여성과 남성중심주의적 사회 간의 갈등 구도 안에서 다시 정의되어야 한다. 잭슨의 소설은 고딕적 기제를 통해 그 당시 여성이 처한 현실적 문제들을 고발함으로써 이차대전 이후 미국의 보수적이고 남성중심적인 사회에 대한 잭슨의 비판의식을 드러낸다. 잭슨의 소설에 나타난 집은 여성이 집과 맺는 관계의 특성에 따라 두 가지로 분류할 수 있다. 첫째, 여성을 가두고 속박하는 공간으로서의 집과, 둘째, 돌아가고 싶어도 돌아갈 수 없는 공간으로서의 집, 즉 심리적인 홈리스 상태를 드러내는 공간으로서의 집이 있다. 본 연구는 마지막으로 이차대전 미국 사회의 이상적인 삶의 표본이 된 서버브에 갇힌 사람들을 분석하여 일상의 공간이 어떻게 사회적 변화에 의해 고딕적인 공간으로 변하는지를 연구한다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

This project investigates Shirley Jackson's short story collections including The Lottery: The Adventures of James Harris, Come Along with Me, and Just an Ordinary Day, and her first fiction, The Road through the Wall to claim her rightful place in American literary history as a woman writer who inherits and reinterprets the Female Gothic tradition. Contextualizing Jackson's fiction, this project seeks to diagnose the anxiety and fear shared by white middle class women in America after World War II. This research attempts to reinterpret Jackson's house fiction in its context of conflicts between women and androcentric society, not utilizing the psychoanalytical formula of "house=mother=femaleness" that has dominated the Female Gothic study, because Jackson's house fiction criticizes the conservative, male-centered American society through her Gothic devices. The houses in Jackson's fiction can be divided into two groups: first, a house that entraps and oppresses women in it; second, a house that a woman can never come back once she leaves. Lastly, the research investigates people entrapped in suburbia, which became the model American life style after the World War II; in The Road through the Wall, we can see how a place for everyday life turns into a Gothic space due to social changes.
