미디어 시대의 문학교육 = Literature Education in the Age of New Media

국문 초록 (Abstract)

교육의 장에서 미디어 문화를 문제 삼는 것은 주로 두 가지 측면인 것으로 보인다. 하나는 매스미디어로 대표되는 대중문화의 문제, 다른 하나는 새로운 커뮤니케이션 능력으로서의 미디어 리터러시의 문제, 특히 미디어 기술의 발전으로 말미암아 시각적 이미지를 주된 커뮤니케이션 수단으로 삼게 된 최근의 미디어 환경 문제가 그것이다. 그동안 미디어를 통한 문학교육은 미디어 문화를 본격문학에 이르기 위한 수단적 방편적 지위로만 인정한 경향이 있다. 이렇게 되면 결과적으로 문학과 미디어 문화 사이의 경계와 위계는 해체되긴커녕 오히려 더욱 공고화될 수도 있다. 문학과 미디어는 종속의 관계도 아니고 병치의 관계도 아니다. 미디어를 통한 문학교육이든 문학을 통한 미디어교육이든, 중요한 것은 학습자들의 생 체험 속에 이미 존재하고 있는 현상, 그러나 제대로 인식하지 못하여 의미화하거나 실천하지 못하고 있는 그 문화적 현상을 교육의 장에서 적극적으로 현동화하여 서로 매개하고 교섭하고 통합함으로써 학습자 스스로 그것을 자신의 언어로 생산해 내게 하는 일이다. 그러기 위해서는 학습자가 텍스트를 인지적으로만 접할 것이 아니라 그 기표의 작동과 유희를 경험하고, 그것을 자신의 독특하고 다양한 문화적 체험과 지식들, 그리고 무엇보다도 미디어를 포함한 다양한 문화적 텍스트들과 상호텍스트적으로 조직하여 자신만의 비평과 분석, 적용의 수준으로 고양시키는 일이 필요하다. 이 과정에서 주체는 자신의 정체성이나 문화에 관한 입장을 발견할 수도 있으며, 특히 생비자로서 자신의 능력과 잠재력을 확인할 수가 있게 된다. 이에 이 논문은 이론적 논의와 더불어 문학교육의 장에서 그것을 실현할 수 있는 실천 사례이자 하나의 교육 자료물로서 일련의 비평적 에세이를 제공하고자 하였다. 이는 단순하게 매체를 읽고 이해하는 능력을 넘어 매체가 전달하는 문화 콘텐츠를 적극적으로 수용하는 심미안과 비평 능력, 나아가 문화콘텐츠를 표현하고 생산하는 능력 신장과 이어진다. 요컨대 미디어 시대 문학교육이 해야 할 일은 바로 이러한 멀티리터러시의 신장을 목표로 언어 및 문학 능력이 문화 능력에 기여하고 동시에 문화 능력이 문학능력 신장에 기여하는 선순환적 소통 관계를 정립하는 것이라 하겠다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

The relationship between literature education and media education should have a virtuous cycle for enhancing the students` multi-literacy and cultural literacy. However, it is often thought that media culture including film, mass media, internet etc. has a bad influence upon the minds of youths. On the other hand, literature is now so boring to them and may not have much say in the development of their cultural literacy. This paper deals this situation from a viewpoint of literature education, but eventually tries to help the students to get an advanced literacy not only of literature but also of media culture. I suggest that literature/media education for media/literature education is needed in order to develop multi-literacy. So I give an example of teaching literature/media through media/literature for enhancing the student`s multi-literacy which is composed by combining various texts of literature and mass media. Actually I give a comprehensive and integrated series of lecture on literature by using multimedia that is related the literary text in terms of theme, subject matter, morals, etc. Then I ask college students to submit a report which shows their own literary or cultural experiences in reference to the text and presents the inter-textuality with other literary or cultural texts. It may look very strange to those who teach literature only by explaining literary texts itself with concrete exegesis on them. However, in my class, a lot of students write unique essays of their own and some of them show high level of cultural literacy. They find their abilities and potentials as so called `prosumers`. They navigate by the internet, follow the hypertexts, and combine them with their own ideas and experiences in relation to the literary text. Thus, multi-media in the literary classroom should be used not just to motivate the students, but to develop their potentials and literacies as producers and consumers in the age of new media.
