At present 43 sewage treatment plants are under operation in Korea, and most of sewage sludge from those plants are disposed by landfilling. In this study, the sludge composting is focused to the efficient treatment and disposal of sewage sludge rather than to the production of high quality of fertilizer. In batch experiment, the reaction temperature was 43℃ in composting process using the sewage sludge alone and it was not increased to proper level for composting. Therefore it was necessary to add some bulking agent in the pre-treatment process. The concentration of heavy metal should be controlled both in raw sludge and in bulking agent to meet the by-product compost standards in terms of heavy metal. Sewage sludge must be reacted at 60℃ for 2 days in composting from the observation of the inactivation of the coliforms selected as an indicate microorganism to verify sanitary safety of sludge compost.
