Enormous amounts of resources and number of personnel are invested to secure national competitiveness in the coming future by using the robot industry as a driving force for national growth. In the past, the robot is primarily used in some special fields requiring professionalism, such as industry, medical, military, universe and agriculture, but the development field of it is gradually extended into the scope of daily life. As the robot is introduced into the life scope of human beings, it is recognized as a communication individual which interacts with human beings, beyond a general product, and therefore the importance of study on the 'robot design' is emphasized. The scenario development and the establishment of characters of the stage of design development show the most prominent difference between robot design and product design process. As the robot is required to not only perform jobs and deliver information but also conduct the 'emotional communication' with human beings, the process different from that of general product design occurs.
In order to understand subjective feelings and measure emotional satisfactions in establishing characters of robot design, the pyschophysical scale method using a questionnaire are frequently used. The pyschophysical scale method which allows subjects to express their subjective favorites as scores, needs careful attention in designing the questionnaire with objectivity, accuracy, validity, reliability and availability. And it is difficult to avoid psychological distortion even if well-designed evaluation mode and questions are used. In order to overcome such a weakness of the pyschophysical scale method, the number of studies using the psycho-shysio-logical measurements should be increased, and especially the electroenceph-alogram (EEG) is one of them. As a scale of favorite, EEG has an advantage in that emotional responses of subjects can be analyzed in real time, and the psychological distortions can be avoided by using objective and direct psycho-shysio-logical measurements, rather than users' subjective evaluations.
In order to effectively overcome many problems of the pyschophysical evaluations, this study examines the interrelation between questionnaire data of robot favorite and EEG data of subjects who perceive form images of robots and explores availability of EEG according to robot design. The industrial dual-arm robot design is applied to study on development cases by verifying the EEG analysis method having the highest correlation with form favorite of the robot design and providing a guideline regarding form favorite analysis method of industrial dual-arm robot design using EEG.
