留置 카테타에 依한 細菌尿에 關한 硏究 = A Clinical Study on the Indwelling Catheter induced Bacteriuria

One hundred and eight urine specimen from indwelling catheter of 43 patients, consist of 19 males and 24 females treated in the RR and ICU of Chosun University Hospital, were studied bacteriologically and concluded as follow.
1. All patient were administered one or more antibiotics and belonged to Surgery, OB-Gyn and Internal medicine services.
2. Duration of indwelling catheterization was from 24 hours to 50 days, usually 1-7 days.
3. Bacteria were cultured from 48,8%0f patient, of which 13.9% showed colony counts of 13,200 to 420,000
4. Significant bacteriuria were found in 5.0, 10.0, 15.4 and 40.0% by the 1st, 2nd, 3rd and over 3 days of indwelling Catheterization respectively.
5. Severity of bacteriuria did not correlate with sex, age and state of consciousness, However poor prognosis seemed to be associated with severe bacteriuria.
6. For the prevention of catheter induced bacteriuria, it is recommended that the careful preselection of catheterization, systemic antibiotics, bladder irrigation with antimicrobials and nurse-monitored closed drainage system should be adopted.
