딕테와 미디어 예술: 상실과 소외의 메타포 = Dictėe and Artistic Media As a Metaphor for Loss and Marginalization

As a postmodern experimental work of art, Theresa Hak Kyung Cha’s Dictėe and her artistic media leave the readers struggling to find a way out of a very perplexing linguistics and visual maze. Characteristic of her exceptionally poetic and conceptual works is an intense engagement with language. One of the difficulties with understanding Dictėe is its chaos narrative technique, which is the most embodied form of story. With its violations of English grammar, use of mixed media, multiple languages, and other seemingly random elements, Dictėe radically disjointed poetics resisted easy identification. Dictėe is composed of quotations, uncaptioned images, letters, and ventriloquized voices, interspersed with what appear to be Cha’s reconstructions of history, memories, dreams, and parables.
Using simple, child-like language, the persona tells the reminiscence of her mother in association with sustenance and home. Exile and diaspora in the text operate on a linguistic level.
The women as characters in Dictėe and Cha’s artistic media are foreigners, exiled from their homes and therefore from their national language. The “loss of homeland” is central to Dictėe and her various media such as artist’ books, mail art, performances, slide shows, film, video, and installations. And the loss of homeland is always connected to a loss not simply of a native land but of language on both literal and a figurative level.
Dictėe and Cha’s artistic media as poetic configuration basically serve as a metaphor for loss and marginalization.

국문 초록 (Abstract)

포스트모더니즘 실험소설로서 차학경의 딕테와 그녀의 미디어예술작품은 언어학적 그리고 시각적인 난해함으로 작품이해가 쉽지 않다. 그럼에도 다분히 시적이고 추상적인 작품에서 언어가 차지하는 중요성과 비중은 몹시 크다고 할 수 있다. 딕테읽기가 어려운 점 중의하나는 작품에서의 카오스 화술 때문이다. 이 작품은 일반적인 문법에서 어긋나고 미디어용어와 다국적 언어를 혼용함으로써 단선적으로 접근할 수 없는 포스트모더니즘의 특징을 여실히 보여준다. 차학경은딕테에서 다양한 인용, 표제가 없는 이미지, 편지, 복화술 등을 이용해역사, 기억, 꿈, 우화를 재해석하고 재구성한다. 어린아이의 언어를 통해서 그녀는 어머니가 살아온 과정과 그녀가 살았던 고향이 그녀에게어떤 의미를 지니는지를 설명하려 한다. 텍스트에서 작가는 고국을 잃은 망명과 디아스포라가 언어와 어떤 관계에 있는지 그리고 언어가 망명자들이나 디아스포라 이주민들에게 어떤 영향을 주고 있는지를 추적해나간다. 딕테와 차학경의 다양한 미디어 예술작품에서의 인물들은고국을 떠난 망명자나 이주민들로서 그들은 동시에 언어를 잃어버린사람들로 묘사된다. 결국 차학경의 작품에서는 그것이 딕테와 같은문학작품이든 메일 아트, 공연, 오디오, 비디오, 영화, 설치와 같은 공연예술 전반이든 디아스포라 이주자로서 가지게 되는 근원적인 상실감과주변화 그리고 그로 인해 대두되는 말과 언어가 중요한 문제로 확대된다.
